I just purchased this Franklin Stereo Volume Pedal. As you can see it has 4 jacks. When I got it in the volume is set to about 1/2 volume & is on all the time. When you depress the volume pedal nothing happens. The string for the pot moves and so does the shaft for the pot. So I know that is working correctly. I'm not much of a wiring guy. Also how can I test the pot while it is still installed in the pedal to see if it is ok?
So I am thinking that maybe someone wired it incorrectly. It is a standard 3 post pot. I don't know if you need a 4 post for a stereo volume pedal or if you just hook it up differently on a 3 post pot. But anyway, like I said, the volume does not increase or decrease. It is just on. Moving the shaft with the string on the pot doesn't increase or decrease the volume. It is just set at about 1/2 volume.
So maybe the wiring is incorrect. The guy I bought it from doesn't know anything about it and didn't tell me this.
Hopefully someone on the forum can take a look at the pictures enclosed and tell me if it is wired correctly or not. Maybe that is the problem.
If I need a 4 post pot for stereo volume, then I will just discontinue that and wire it for a standard 1 in and 2 out, like a Goodrich 120.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you could tell me what to try first to solve the problem, etc.
NOTE: BILL LOWE JUST INFORMED ME THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE POT. I GUESS I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THERE WERE 2 AT ONE TIME. I SNAPPED A PIC OF IT AND ADDED IT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PICS JUST NOW. I WOULD ASSUME FOR STEREO VOLUME YOU NEED 2. NOW SINCE I LOOKED AT THE UNDERCARRIAGE YOU CAN SEE THAT THERE IS AN AREA FOR A 2ND POT ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE. I DON'T KNOW IF IT WAS EVER HOOKED UP OR NOT. MAYBE IT WAS PURCHASED JUST TO USE AS A SINGLE POT VOLUME PEDAL WITH 1 IN AND 2 OUT. I DON'T KNOW IF PAUL SR. USED THE SAME VOLUME PEDAL BODY FOR ALL OF HIS PEDALS OR NOT.
BUT AT THIS POINT I WOULD JUST LIKE TO HOOK UP AS A SINGLE POT UNIT AND NOT BE USED AS A STEREO VOLUME PEDAL.
IS THIS POSSIBLE WITH WHAT I HAVE HERE? TXS FOR THE INFO BILL.

I have a pedal like this but it was'nt a stereo pedal. It was for a spare pot with two separate circuits. When one pot goes bad the allen screw was tightened to activate the other pot and you moved your cords to that circuit.Worked well but hard to work on in such tight areas. |

Bill,
TXS for pointing out that it only has one pot. Like I said I don't work on volume pedals and actually don't know much about them. I snapped a picture of the underside of the pedal where the other pot could be installed. I also commented about it above on the initial post.
With what I have here could I utilize this as a single pot volume pedal like a Goodrich? Is the wiring hooked up incorrectly for that?
Any help would be appreciated.
If you look at the wiring on this pedal could anyone tell me if the wiring is hooked up wrong for a single in, double out pedal, like the Goodrich 120?
Or could someone send me a schematic on how to hook up the wiring from the pot to the 3 jacks on a volume pedal, like the Goodrich 120? Then I could see myself if the wiring is hooked up incorrectly.

Al,
The inputs should be in and out, in and out, with two pots....These pedals were never made to work as a spare pedal although some folks thought that was the single purpose for having two pots.......Its a true stereo pedal great for using effects through one amp and drier through the next amp........I still use the stereo most times...With the single Little walter 50 I just use one side of the pedal.....Its the same as the Emmons and Sho-Bud pedals.....A simple string turning the pot to its full destination......With a good pot you should find someone who knows how to set the taper on the basic string pedals and you'll be on your way......

Al,
If the pot turns clockwise when the pedal is depressed,( looking at the pot from the shaft end), the black wire in the picture should be connected to both jacks at the connector that contacts the shielded part of the cable on both jacks. The middle wire should contact the tip connector of one of the jacks, and the third terminal on the pot should go to the tip of the other jack. I'm not sure where the wires going to the extra jack are connected, but they are not necessary for mono, but could be used for an extra amp output if you plug the instrument into the jack closest the pot in the picture. and that third jack is connected just as the 2nd back from the pot. I can't tell for sure in the picture if that's exactly where they are connected. Also, the jacks look as though they could use some cleaning or replacing to make better contact with the cable ends. If it gets quieter when the pedal is depressed, switch the black and red with each other on the pot. I can't tell for sure which part of the jack they are connected to.
If you have an ohm meter handy, place on lead on each of the jack where the tip contacts. when you depress the pedal, there should be less ohms, and more when you let off the pedal. Also, the change should be smooth and constant, not scratchy
If that doesn't work, change out the pot and wire it the same way as I said.

TXS for all your input guys. Don, txs for the info on where the wires should go. I will trace them and see what's what. Paul, thanks also for your input and Bill and Bobby Boggs, thanks for your emails with the info.
Hopefully I can figure this out.

Al, It looks as if the pedal once had the second pot. Originally, the front two jacks were wired to the existing pot and the rear two went to the missing pot. It looks to me that someone has now simply split the signal before the remaining pot and used the third jack as a signal tap. As far as the existing pot is concerned, it looks like it's wired correctly but I can't be sure from the pic. However, I can tell you that the collar on the post of the pot is upside down. I suspect that the set screw on the collar may be loose and the collar turning but not the shaft. If tightening the set screw lets you change volume, you may find the pot is working backwards. If you invert the collar, you will find that you need to run the string over the left edge of the fastening plate, and this will require rewinding the string in the opposite direction in order to get it lined up and should result in the pot no longer working backwards. As pictured, the string now breaks over the right side, which is designed to align with the missing pot. When properly wired with two pots, one string must rap around the bottom of it's collar and the other string must wrap around it's collar's top first. This is because the pots are oriented with the shafts facing each other, and to avoid having one increase while the other decreases, it is necessary to reverse the winding direction of the string on the pot that is going backwards. |

Bill,
No need to apologize.....I just wanted to state its original concept.......Dad would always tell folks the plus side is when you get tired of playing the stereo concept you will always have the other side as a spare pedal......Using the spare pedal approach saved my butt many times when a pot went scratchy on the road.

The Red (hot) wire goes from the Input-Jack to Terminal #1 of the pot. The Green is (hot) going from Pot Terminal #2 to the Output-Jack Hot-Terminal. Then a Parallel Green to Output-Jack (hot) #2, and even Jack #3 if desired! Then the Black (Ground) goes from Pot Terminal #3 to the Ground-Terminals on all Jacks. It is also true that the collar is backwards on the Pot-Shaft and should be reversed and lined up with the other side of the Aluminum-Plate. Move the small screw over to the left hole. _________________ <marquee> Go~Daddy~Go, (No), Go, It's your Break Time</marquee> L8R, jb

TXS for everyone's help. I took all your advice. I had purchased 2 volume pedals from this guy at the same time. Their are issues with both of them. He has agreed to take both pedals make and refund me at 100%. It is a stereo volume pedal, but as you can see, there was only one pot in it. One was removed at one time or another. So I would have to purchase another pot, have it wired, etc. So what I paid for both, I wouldn't recoup my $, so he's taking them both back refunding my $and he is going to attempt to repair them & resell them.
At least I learned a lot from all your wealth of knowledge on repairing pedals and and how they are wired, etc.
TXS-Bob please close out. Again, txs for everyones' help.

I think if I had bought the pedal pictured, I would have kept it and restored it to it's original condition! I think this model is becoming rare, in that I don't think it is any longer available in the ‘Free-Standing’ model. I've been looking for one like this for quite a while, but; with no luck, so far! _________________ <marquee> Go~Daddy~Go, (No), Go, It's your Break Time</marquee> L8R, jb
