I have an opportunity to pick up a nearly new Sierra D-10 8X6 for around $1900.
I currently own and play an MSA 8X5. It is quite old but is mechanically sound and I get great tone from it.
I went on the Sierra website and it appears that they are no longer building PSG, only lap steels.
(1) What is your opinion on the sound and quality of the Sierra?
(2) Am I crazy to want to have this second steel?
thx in advance,

In your humble opinion, with Sierra apparently out of the PSG business, is there a risk owning one? _________________ GFI Ultra S10, Beard MA-6, lot'o'guitars |

Both guitars have great attitudes, i can't see a problem! Who cares, most of em are out of buisiness, doe's a steel really need that many parts, most of them are bulletproof and asking around, you find any advancements you need, sierra??? Hell yeah!! _________________ A.K.A Chappy. |

Gary, our opinions don't matter. Some of us like Sierras, some don't.
The question is whether you like the guitar or not. If you like it, buy it. If you don't like it pass, but base that decision on your feelings, not somebody else's. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Very high quality guitars, as David says. Probably considerably lighter than your MSA. |

Mike,
You wrote "Gary, our opinions don't matter. Some of us like Sierras, some don't."
I asked for opinions, so they do matter to me. BTW, thanks for sharing your opinion! .
There is a wealth of experience out here on the web and hopefully I will glean a nugget or two from the SGF folks that will help me frame my decision.
The Sierra is in another state which I will be in next week which will allow me to form my own opinion.
Here is something crazy... I remembered a guitar/mando player friend in town had bought a S-12 a couple of years ago(don't remember the brand). Just for grins, I sent him a note asking if he had plans to sell it. Guess what, he was just about to post it here.
I have been interested in trying the Universal tuning... this should be fun.
So, yes by all means offer up your opinions, even better if they are based on solid reasoning.
Best regards to all. _________________ GFI Ultra S10, Beard MA-6, lot'o'guitars |

Hey Gary...you mean to tell me there's a steel player here in Petaluma, I don't know!? I thought I knew all three. I've got a Sierra 12 (ext. e9) right here in lovely Petaluma that you can come check out...email me directly if you want to come check it out. |

Gary let me clarify what I meant. Sierra's are very well built guitars. As far as I know, they have no mechanical problems or issues. What they do have is, for lack of a better word, a unique "personality." I know of know other way to describe it.
Some people love the way Sierra's play and sound, and others do not. One player who shall remain nameless, told me he hates them. (This person plays a Push Pull and doesn't care for any all pull guitars.)
It's completely subjective. The only way you'll know whether you'll be happy with a Sierra, or any guitar for that matter, is to sit down at one and try it out. You may really like it, or you may really not. But you are the only person who can determine that. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

I've never personally seen or played a Sierra, but there are some super players, like Joe Wright, for instance, who seem to play nothing but Sierras. It's the same with Derby, the guitar I play. A few name players seem to play them exclusively. It's like Mike said--all of our ears and brains, and the way we play are different. |

Thanks to all for your comments and to this forum. As a result of this post I have met a fellow Petaluman, Ross Shafer. Ross showed my around his shop and I got to look at a Sierra first hand, an S-12. I learned a little about the Universal tuning and the locking mechanism for B6.
Now that I have had a few daze to consider my options, I get back to the real "problem to solve", i.e. my PSG is just heavy and takes up a lot of real estate. These two factors have kept me from taking it to the majority of my gigs, which tend to be in small areas and no room to fit a five piece band & a PSG.
My friend loaned me his GFI Ultra S-12 yesterday and I got a chance to sit down and try out the Universal. I am not convinced that this is the direction I want to go, but it was significantly lighter than my MSA.
I think practically speaking I should be looking for a used S-10 with a short body or perhaps an S-12 with extended E9. _________________ GFI Ultra S10, Beard MA-6, lot'o'guitars |
