Hello,
I am new to the forum(FINALLY!) and I have a question regarding a black s10 bmi.
I am looking at purchasing this guitar, but the man selling has mentioned that somebody has drilled the cabinet under the bmi logo to fit a rod for the RKR.
Does this guitar sound familiar to anyone? If so , could you please explain further, why this had been done to add a knee. The man said the knee doesnt work but I want to know if it can be fixed. Sorry no pics at this time.
Thanks
-Jeff |

BMI's have an aluminum frame, it's pre-drilled for the appropriate cross bars. There's no need to drill any holes unless you are installing parts that are not designed like the factory parts. If some unconventional knee lever has been installed, it could be removed and original factory parts could be installed easily. There were a lot of BMI's that originally had only three knee levers from the factory. |

thanks for the response. Would you say that $1250.00 is a fair price for this guitar? Or would I be better off saving up a bit more. |

That sounds high for this guitar. I had one, and I think mine was around 800. most sell between 800-1000. |

Don't know about price, but I might be a little cautious with this one. If he had to drill a hole to mount a knee lever that doesn't work, what else has he done to it and what else doesn't work. I would request him to get you some good pictures first. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I'm not sure about this particular guitar,,,but generally speaking they are the most under valued guitar on the market. Most players want nice shiny machine work,,,that has become the valuation factor of steel guitars,,,and yes,, BMIs have a tendency to look like they are built from the local Ace Hardware store,,,but they get the job done and get it done well. And they are, for the most part, not the same old reinvention of the wheel. They are, as the Kline and the Anapeg, unique in their design and mechanics, as was their predecessor the ZB. JMHO |

Jeff,
I would need to see pictures of the guitar. I don't think it's a big deal to fix. Why the guy drilled through the frame I don't know. I'd have to look it and see. If you decide to get it, we can fix whatever problem it has.

Jeff, the front apron has a panel that slides in. You can take off one frame corner and slide the panel out and slide another one in like changing the front on an automatic dish washer. Very nice feature. The RKR is the one thing about the BMI that I would like to see a design change and that might be what prompted someone to try to "improve" the RKR. BMI is a very good guitar. I have a D10 that I like very much.

I've only seen one or two in person, and they are very nice guitars. I would just make sure I saw pics of the undercarriage first. May be this guitar is in great shape other than the hole, which according to Jerry is easy to fix. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . It looks like they copied the LKR when making the RKR. It looks like you can see the rod sticking out the from the front, just under the logo. Actually, I think that lever probably could be made to to work. But You could remove it and install the factory parts. As Jerry said above, you could also replace the front mica panel so the hole would not be seen. Otherwise, it looks like a pretty nice guitar. Considering the work needed, 1250 is too much. As it is, maybe offer 800. Just my opinion. |

Jeff,
I've circled where the crossbar needs to go.
in order to accomplish this:
1. Move the crossbar down where it goes.
2. Move the angle clips on top of the crossbar instead of underneath.
3. Get another piece of mica to replace the other one if there is a hole in it. I can't tell.
Other than that it looks good.

I had one just like the one your talking about and it didn't need split tuners. For some reason, probably geometry, when I raised any string by a whole and lowered it with another lever by a half the halves were dead on. I had to install splits on my other steel as it didn't come with them. Also IMHO BMI's underneaths are the easiest to work on. A couple of cotter pins and screws and you've got a new change. |
