I have this older Emmons Legrand single neck E9th that had a George L TW pickup on it when I bought the guitar. Every time I play the guitar out people keep telling me how good the guitar sounds. They say the guitar sounds better than the other guitars I play. I have been using stainless steel strings. OK--I am wondering some things. First, the George L TW pickup is a humbucking pickup. I have never ever heard a humbucking that sounded as good as a single coil. Sorry for all of you who are in love with a humbucking sound. To me there is always something missing from a humbucking sound when put up beside a single coil. With this George L TW pickup I seem to be getting that single coil sound. It isn't that great push pull sound, but it is far better sounding than a humbucking should sound. The next thing that confuses me is at times the TW pickup will hum, but not as bad as a single coil. Most single coils I have dealt with have no hum, so why do I hear hum once in a while out of this George L TW? Next question: If I went from the George L TW pickup to a single coil true tone pickup, would that put me closer to a push pull sound? |

Keith, your Emmons sounded very good at the Branson jam. But, of course, it is an Emmons. I would not be too quick to be changing the pickup.

The TW is a great sounding pickup. I put one in my friend's Mullen a while back and we were pleased with the tone. Keith I would think that since your fine pedal has a buffer circuit in it you could get plenty of highs out of about any pickup you have on there though. I am surprised to hear you are getting hum from a GeorgeL. My experience has been they are dead quiet. What I want from a pickup is this: It must not be microphonic, It must be quiet (no hum) and of course it needs to have good frequency response (lows and highs).
If you really want THE sound of a push-pull you're going to have to get you an old push-pull because that sound comes from the changer. |
