What do people consider the best pedal steel breaks on contemporary country songs (songs recorded in the last five years or so)? I'm talking about commercial, Nashville country... not indie/retro/country rock country artists. |

Even though she's biased I'm with Theresa -- Paul's solo on River of Love is an absolute cracker ! and it's twice as long as usual which is even better. _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9

I really like the steel work on Jo-Dee Messina's debut CD. The song is track 2, "Wing and a prayer".
That CD is the reason I battle with that instrument now. |

How about a George Strait tune called, "I just want to dance with you" or something like it. Heard it just once in a bar a few weeks ago but it knocked my socks off. |

It's more than 5 years old, I know, but I rate Tom Brumley's solo on Dwight Yokam's 'The Heart That You Own' as one of my favorites |

I wouldn't consider Adilida contemporary.
This is Brent Mason and Buddy Emmons... at their BEST!!!.
I hate new stuff it just is NOT Country!.
Best song? ever on a Steel? Try Going where the lonely go...Norm Hamlett aced that one!.
It had everything movements and Chromatics listen to those Chromatic licks he puts in ....Goodness!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohyrBDJkksM
How could anyone play any better than this.??
Listen to the Volume pedal that is a craft in itself.
Norm is one of the MOST underated players of ALL TIME! |

well one of my favorite steel breaks of the past 20 (is this still contemporary?) years still is JH's short sweet break on 'Look At Us' by Vince Gill. It ain't flashy or fast or in your face but full of real feeling. Paul Franklin is one for good contempory playing in past 5 years...hard to narrow it down to one or two players or songs.

"I Just Want To Dance With You" is a great song with steel in it, and also "One Night At A Time". "One Night At A Time" features a great steel solo by Paul Franklin(studio) and Mike Daily(live). And, the solo on Brad's "I Wish You'd Stay" is beautiful! I've played along with it so many times.

This isn't stylistically "contemporary country", of course, but it's from 6 years ago: Paul Franklin on George Jones's "Funny How Time Slips Away":

Paul Franklin on Alan Jackson's version of "Freight Train." Very recent (2010) and he gets 2+ full breaks. Oh: and they're pretty hot!
I love "I just wanna dance with you," but it doesn't really have a steel break (great fills in the chorus, though). Buddy Emmons, yes? Likewise "Pretty good at drinkin beer": goiod fills but no steel break. (and not Buddy Emmons; don't know who it is).

Paul Franklin played steel on "Pretty Good At Drinkin' Beer". He's playin' steel on Billy's latest record, also Paul is the steel player on "I Just Wanna Dance With You".
