What would be the top ten country standards/songs every pedal steeler should know?
Just curious of some opinions.
I'm looking for those Classic Country songs that everybody knows (or should) at least a few breaks/intros to and can pull off in a few keys. |

here my list of the top 10 Songs:
1. achy breaky heart or old McDonald had a farm
2. YMCA
3. Smoke on the water
4. Stayin' Alive
5. Bob Wills is still the king(RollingStones -Version)
6. Born this Way (Lady Gaga)
7. Somewhere my Love
8. Born in the USA
9. to all the girls I've loved befor
10. Birds and the bees
Not that you must.... but it's nice to have it in your repertoire  |

| They weren't much help, were they? I sincerely hope that some of them were being facetious, naming all of those rock songs as being good for steel. The guy who mentioned Together Again had the best list in my opinion. Though I would add I Love You Because...that song works well as a steel instrumental. |

8. Intro to Walkin' After Midnight
9. Sleepwalk (not country, but too cool)

Ray,WAS'NT KIDDING AT ALL. Play LOT'S more R AND R on my MSA Classic than country, Found out years ago that a steel is not JUST a country instrument.I love to play some of it all.Play a lot of blues also,The steel with a distortion pedal is GREEEEAT for blues.If I had to depend on JUST country gigs would'nt work to much.I'm just as confortable playing a Skynard tune as I am an ET tune.Think about it. It's ALL music and it can ALL be played on steel.The more styles you play the more you WILL work. YOU BETCHA,DYK?BC.

San Antonio Rose

I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry

Hey Bob,
You know what a sick sense of humor us musicians have. I played with a group years ago in the early 70's and we had a lot of parodies for standard tunes.One of the popular songs of the day that was often requested by unhappy wives we called "Regrease Me". Apologies to Englebert Humperdink.

As the resevoir of TRUE country-folk grow older by the minute and die-off, then that list will almost surely become ear-elephant.
Almost as soon as you take the time to compile a list, it will turn out to be "who cares?"; only except to a dying coterie of diehards.
The deal is, play any song, play it very well, and it will be loved.
