It depends on what you are playing.

If you are playing a file, .mp3 et al. then you just mail the file as an attachment

If you are listening to a stream, http://steelradio.com/, then you are out of luck (unless you first save the stream to a file using a program like Audacity
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/?lang=en

Generally they can. You have to be able to find the song on your hard drive and then "attach" it to your email, just as if it were a picture.

But there might be size considerations. Your ISP might not let you send attachments over, say, 10 MB in size.

In that case, you need to make the song smaller. Best advice would be to use MP3 files rather than WAV or WMA because they are nearly always smaller. You can always make the mp3 smaller by "resampling" if you need to shrink it down. You lose a bit of sound quality.

I wouldn't shrink it down or change the file format unless I knew I had to in order to successfully send the email.

Have you failed?

How big is it?

What is the file format? If it is anything other than an mp3, it may be too large to email.

You can use a program like Audacity to open the file and change it's format or resample it to a lower "bitrate". If the file is not mp3, you may have to do both. If it is already an mp3, you would just change the bitrate (resample).

The term "bitrate" applies only to mp3 files.

You then "export" the song back to your hard drive in the new file format or with the new (lower) sampling rate. The lower the bitrate, the smaller the file. If you get below 64 kb as a bitrate, the sound quality goes south quickly, for music files. Lower than that is OK for speech.

Takes a few seconds per song.

There are other programs besides Audacity that can do it.

Sonny:

"Switch" can easily convert formats on songs and also resample to a smaller size.

Get it here. Poke "Download Switch Audio File Converter for Windows" on the left side of the screen.

Don't use "get it now" or "purchase" on the right side.

The download is the free version

http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html

When you install it, uncheck all the choices for additional programs that pops up. You don't want any of that.

When you run it, be sure to check in the lower left to choose "output format". You would probably choose mp3 if the file is not already an mp3.

You should also look at "encoder options" in the lower left. Choose "variable bitrate". You may have to experiment with the "quality" choice, but the higher the number, the lower the quality and the smaller the file.

Choose "output to same folder as source files".

Then just go to the green cross at the upper left and load your file.

Then poke "convert".

It takes a few seconds and you can watch the progress.

Then go to the folder and check out the new file, sound quality, and size.

Hey Mitch,,,thank you very much,,sounds like something I may be able to do. Not often I want to send someone a music file,,but when I do maybe this will make it easier for me and the recipient. Thanks again!
