Well,Well....First what it is and then what it isn't. A Banner Headstock , "Only A Gibson Is Good Enough" 1942 LOO acoustic guitar. Four digit 27XX F.O.N. number with the faint red pencil digit(s) following.14 frets clear of the body ,no truss rod model, 14 3/4 lower bout with 10 and 1/4 upper bout measurements . Bound Mahogany back,sides with a one piece mahogany neck / fingerboard (wartime shortage ?).Looks to be original frets,tuners,tuning buttons. Now at some point the original owner decided she needed to freshen up her little guitar
( lordy ,lordy ) her granddaughter attests that she has always seen the guitar black as we see it now, so either the guitar came from Gibson with an all black finish and then granny spruced her up with a new coat of black paint or the granddaughters memory is incorrect, (but since granny bought the guitar new in 1942 I will assume the granddaughter has only seen it as is - all black.) There are definitely sand scuffs below the finish ( see last picture), the vibrant fire stripe pick guard has been trimmed at the upper end to a point (probably cracked),1 tuning key bushing has fallen out as they are smooth and do not bite into the headstock wood and there is a crack from the bound sound hole to the first X brace before the Brazilian rosewood bridge. Priced as an obvious refinished guitar with a later chip case in perfect condition. Now if it were mine, since no refinish work would further devalue this old girl I would have my luthier chemically strip the guitar (sans headstock face) and refinish in a lighter coat of black with a nice burst or natural top to show of the spruce hidden on the top, may even make the guitar worth more, would definitely open her back up to where she should be. So there ya have it, 2800.00 OBO
