A few months ago, someone posted concerning any interest of forming a Missouri Steel Guitar Association. Has there been any interest so far? |

Jim-Bob..Maybe you would be interested in taking the bull by the horns on this..
Our neighbors, The Razor-backs, Okies, and Jay-hawks are way ahead of all us Missouri steeler folks, in this venue.

I'd be interested. I'm sure that more than a few other folks would be "in" as well. N.

Y'all could come to our club jams here in Florida.
Having lived in KCMO for many years, there was never any jams around except Bill Jobe's September jam - and I never made it to those as "murphy's law" would have it I was either traveling on business or had a picking job on the day's he had his jams. |

I'd be interested also. Just like Terry, I work on the Missouri side (and pay my state taxes there too ).
Anyway, I think it was perhaps Kenny Burford who
was trying to see if anyone would be interested in having a steel jam (maybe with some invited players also). |

My initial conception was to hold quarterly country music jam session in KCMO area, but several of the newer players on the steel guitar expressed their reluctance to participate in an open jam session. They didn't feel comfortable enough on the instrument enough to play in a group of advanced players. I really had not given it much more thought until this past week when I spoke with a friend of mine near Fort Leonard Wood about putting together a steel guitar association for his area. He has constructed a large metal building and holds jam sessions and shows in it and he did expressed an interest in holding a steel guitar jam session in his facility. I am not sure how a state association should be formed, nor am I a steel guitar player, so I don't know that I would be the person to organize a Missouri Steel Guitar Association, but if others did not have a problem with it I would be interested in being a part of it. I will throw this much out, in my mind I thought it would be good to have one Missouri Steel Guitar Association, but have it broken down into 4 to 6 districts or chapters which were determined regional areas. That way you could have different district jam sessions that folks near the area could attend quarterly as well as other members and guest all under the umbrella of the association which could meet annually for an event. However, I realize with the International Steel Guitar Show being held in St. Louis each fall that may preclude any state steel guitar event from happening. It was just a thought and like I said I am not a steel guitarist, so I am not sure I have a full understanding what would or would not work in Missouri. Another option could to just have an informal get together. It seems like a big first step to jump into trying to start up a formal state-wide organization with different chapters. Maybe something like that could evolve over time.
Kenny, I hear you play another instrument and are pretty good at it. |

We have various levels in our Florida Steel Guitar Club. When I started the club one thing I always stessed was that proficiency was not an issue.
Over the last 3 1/2 years, everyone in the club has advanced and everyone has got over shyness and playing with or for other steelers. Some have just come to the club jams and listened and watched and finally they get up the nerve to join in.
At our monthly club jams, we start out with each steeler doing two instrumentals, alone, and then depending onthe number of steelers we will go around again with either one or two songs. Finally at the end we usually have a roundrobin jam with anyone that wants to participate.
Our first Anniversary show was strictly club members and was set up to give club memebers a chance to pick in a show type setting. Many may never get the chance to pick at a steel show but the club anniversary show allows them to do that.
You'll find that once you start the club "they will come out of the woodwork". In the winter we may have 15 or 16 steels, in the summer we will average around 10 steels at a club jam. We started out with 5 steels and it keeps getting bigger and better each year. |

I think this is a good idea but a challenging project. We have KC steelers STL steelers Branson steelers and getting evryone together could be interesting. Personally I live in the center of the state so going to jams and meetings is not to bad as I live two hours from everywhere. I agree with Kenny B. Maybe do chapters, communicate thru the web and then have a yearly state convention. Just a thought, I live at the lake of the Ozarks and we could acomodate a state convention with playing facilitis and rooms. (and some pretty decent fishing and shopping for the ladies!)Plus as I said we are in the middle of the state so to speak.
There actually are a lot of steelers in our great state so I think this definately something to think about I would support it as much s time allows me.

We already have the Ozark Steel Guitar Association headquartered in Branson, Terry Bethel handles most of the business. An alternative might be for those in the rest of the state to join the OSGA, and then have local functions. A larger club can usually do more than a smaller one. Also it would give a larger pool of members who might be interested in doing some of the administrative and promotional duties. |

Doug,
You beat me to the punch.
I will do everything I can to help, in any way I can. I started the The Ozark Steel Guitar Association 14 years ago, It would be great to have an influx of new members from the sho-me state, or I will join your association and do everything I can to help promote you.

What ever you all decide, let me know how I can help. Here's a thought - perhaps the 'Midwest SGA' with chapters such as the OSGA, SSSGA, Tulsa SGA, KC, LA AR MS Club that Billy Henderson is trying to get going, the CISGA...that's 5 chapters already. Just need one up toward the Iowa border unless there is one already. Just a thought. Let me know if I can help ya'll in any way.

Just like to remind everyone that there is an organization in Baxter Springs, Kansas called the Kansas Steel Guitar Association. We will be having our 4th Annual Convention the first weekend of October and its a free convention. We're located 15 miles west of Joplin, Missouri and have our meetings the first Sunday of every month. Go to our website: www.kansassteelguitarassociation.com

I agree with Doug and Terry. Joining an allready existing association would be a big step in the right direction. My only suggestion is that some how via committees or something if all four corners of the state could be represented in the association. Just my thoughts...

And also, have local functions like other clubs. Terry does not have the time to work on those so they could be hosted by groups in various areas of the state or as Scott suggested, in the central area and still be associated with The OSGA-- I would certainly support it in any way I could. |

Jim Bob we at the Rhode Island Steel Guitar assoc. that my wife Anna and I formed 9 years ago have steel players driving over 300 miles to come and play at our Steel Show once a year. We also have quarterly meetings and we have guys driving 70 miles or better to come to the Meetings and Jam after the meetings. We also have all levels of players and the better players show the newer players a few things to help them like Pick blocking and Palm blocking and a few Licks.Don't have your Show to near the St Louis Show.

Hey guys how about satelite orginazations? In other words how about members from Ozarksteel guitar or SSSGA or KSGA allowing a satelite group to get together in thier areas. Would definatly boost memberships and make it easier for those who live so far away to attend jams. Just a wild thought!

Kenny, I am guessing no such organization in the KC Metro. I think we would have heard of it by now.
I am thinking some of these community centers rent to citizens real cheap (I think I saw the one near me rents for $5 an hour if reserved by a resident, plenty of room to accomodate a hand full of steelers for an informal get together.
At the minimum I think it is feasible to start out having an informal, non-chartered group that gets together for a weekend afternoon once in a while.
Also, we don't have use the same meeting spot everytime. City fellas like me should be willing to drive out yonder in the country too.
P.S. I like the format that Jack Stoner suggested -- Everybody plays two songs. It does not matter if the only song you can play is "Mary Had a Little Lamb. If you're trying you're best, that's all "that matters. We all seem to be a real encouraging bunch and that's what its all about.
