My favorite style of lead/backup guitar playing is the stuff we used to hear on Conway Twitty's and Loretta Lynn's recordings. Who were the guitar players on those records? I know the steel players, but the guitar licks were just as good as the steel playing.
I believe David Thornhill was Loretta's road player, but who was Conway's?
I am so glad see Randy Lindley (with Amber Digby) carrying this now forgotten style. This man has it down!

The classic 335/Echoplex sound, as played by Grady, Pete Wade, Jimmy Capps (like on the Wilburn Bros. TV show) and many others. Just great. Most guitar players seem to think they need 87 notes to say what Grady could say in 3 or 4 notes.

| Pete is correct, Grady Martin, identifiable buy his tone, his tasteful use of "echo" and the inimitable vibrato at the end of phrases. |

| I agree Cal. George Edwards once called the guys that put in a lot of notes "computer pickers". A lot of notes and very little feeling. Grady showed 'em how. |

Thanks guys. I had no idea it was Grady. That "simple" style just knocks me out every time I hear it. Very few players seem to play like that any more.

Pete Wade was on lead guitar on the Conway/Loretta sessions in 1970 and 1971 ("After The Fire Is Gone", "Back Street Affair", "Hangin' On", etc.)
The 1972 sessions are not documented other than what you can tell by ear.
From 1973 to about 1980, it's Grady.
Reggie Young is on one late 1980 session. |
