I am building a new 10 string lap steel, but most 10 string pickups have pole pieces close together (For pedal steel spacing)
I am considering using a 12 string pickup so I can keep my favorite 3/8" string spacing.
Of course the magnet poles won't line up, and I was wondering if a George L E66-12 would work?
Are there any other rail type pickups out there that don't have individual string poles?
Thanks in advance;

I'm in the process of building a couple of 10 stringers, myself. I'm using the E66-12 in one, and a custom Jerry Wallace TrueTone single coil with 3/8" spacing for the other.
Mr. Wallace is very accessible, and was happy to make the pickup I wanted.
I would probably be happy with just the single coil, and, as single coils go, the TrueTones run very quiet, but I like the idea of having a double coil, too, at least for recording. |

I just finished my new ten string lap steel. It has the exact string width measurements we obviously both like. I used a "tonealigner" pup, both volume and tone are 500 ohm, and I used an oil paper cap. This steel has the best tone of any I have built or bought! I built it 24 1/2 " scale length (my favorite) with a total overall length of 26 1/4" - I designed a keyless head which goes in under the nut at the head. I can't get pictures to post - yet. All the best in your ten string build. Got the pup from Gary Sill, sillmusicsupply.com Cheers - Ray |

yes - the keyless tuner works very well. It is faster to change strings and retune (to my surprise). I can send pictures via email, just have no luck here. The tuner is my own design, you load the string and secure from the end and tune from underneath - sounds awkward but I have no problem. Cheers - Ray |
