For you that know me you are aware that I write articles whenever the opportunity makes itself available, so I have taken the liberty of putting one here.
“The stars at night are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas.” Without the stars over the Ft. Worth/Dallas area were just a little brighter this past weekend as hundreds of steel guitar and western swing fans gathered for the Texas Steel Guitar Jamboree.
For some of us it was our first time to see just what an outstanding the event the Texas Steel Guitar Associations annual Jamboree actually is, for others it was just another step on the journey that began with small group dedicated steel guitarist twenty-two years ago, who were determined to make it an annual event, which now draws steel guitar music fans from around the world. It is a time to make new acquaintances, visit with old friends, see some of the finest instruments hold em’, touch em’, pick em’ and for a lucky few own em’. For some it’s a chance to get on stage and play some fine music and for others it’s a time to just sit back and listen to some of the finest steel guitar playin’ this side of heaven. It is also a time when some of the greatest steel guitarist in the industry take time to recognize many of the great steel players who are no longer with us, they may even play one of their signature licks to remind us all just how much we have lost with their passing.
I am not a Texan, not even a honorary Texas as Lynn Owsley believed himself to be before this years TSGS, but I believe for the first time I truly understand the words to all those Texas songs which boast of Texas' greatness. Job well done goes out to all the members, vendors and performer at the 2006 TSGA Jamboree.

Amen Kenny! I grew up in Colorado, and there has always been a good-natured rivalry between Texans, and any body from any other State, but I love Texas and for the most part TEXANS. I wouldn't get to play as much REAL Country music in any other State, or any other part of the world, as far as that goes. And by the way, Thanks for coming to Texas, (TSGA) and most especially, for spending your sunday afternoon between the Curtis Potter Benefit, at Pearls, and then with us at the Stagecoach Ballroom. I hope you had a great time. Thanks for coming, and don't wait so long to come back! |

Chuck, I had great time, it is the best time I have had in years. I was great hearing all the talent at the TSGA Show, then Sunday afternoon it just kept on being fun. Last summer all I did was work from 6 am to 9:30 pm everyday, seven days a week, but this year is going to be different. The players in FWD lit a fire under me, making me want to work at play again. In fact I am even thinking about starting my own band again, something I never thought I would say or do again. I have decided to start taking some jazz guitar classes, plus I am going to attempt to line up some one on one sessions with some of the better guitarist I have heard over the Internet and in person. I am pretty disappointed in my playing, my sound is not as tasteful as I would like it to be, I do not execute what I can to a satisfactory level and I am stale. Bobby Caldwell, yourself and the other lead guitarist I heard in the FWD area reminded me just how complacent I have become about my playing. Next year I will come back an expanded and better player. |

Folks, If you've never heard Kenny, He is being way too hard on himself. He is an outstanding picker. I don't hand out compliments to everyone I meet, but Kenny has all the talent, tone, and taste to go with it. Kenny, I'm just wishing I could have talked you into getting up, and setting in with us at the Stagecoach. |

Kenny, let me second Donna Dodd's comment.
Glad you had a great time in Texas and who knows, maybe we could make "you" and honorary Texan.
Best wishes,
....Roy

Hey Kenny,
Remember the pickin' we did on the Wild Bill show? You played some great stuff and I always enjoyed workin with you. Hope we get the chance to do it again. You don't have to take a back seat to anyone when it comes to playing great guitar. I didn't get to go to Dallas this year but plan on being there next year. Vance. www.nightskyopry.com

Yes, Vance I certainly do remember and I really miss pickin' with you Bill and Abe. Those were great times, I really appreciated Bill always keeping the show country and your steel and fiddle playing. How's the better half of your marriage? I am thinking about making it down for the jam session in Arkansas on the 21st. of April; however, it's still a little early to be absolutely sure yet. Can you recomment a decent motel which is reasonably priced to stay in that evening? I have to play for a wedding on the 22nd. so I will have to head back around noon on Saturday if I do manage to make it down. |
