Topic: Age of this Nashville 400? |

I bought this Nashville 400 used about 13-15 years ago. Lately, I've see pics of several on this site but none with the expanded metal grill like mine. Any guesses as to the age of this amp? Serial # is 7A-02922062.

| 1987 model and that metal grill was added at some point as all NV-400's had clothe grill covers. |

Not that it matters, but that may be a completely different cabinet entirely.
Speakers were rear mounted in 400's. That's not to say someone couldn't have reversed the T-nuts and bolts on the baffle board, but it just doesn't appear to be an original box to me.
I like the looks of it a lot though. |

Contact Mike Brown at Peavey, I think he can give you an idea of the age. The chrome corners on NV400's was done early in the model, as well as the early models had 1502 Blackwidow speaker. Then they switched to black painted corner guards, and 1501 Blackwidow speaker, not sure if that happened at the same time. Pretty sure your grill is not original. Give Mike Brown a call at Peavey, you can get their phone number off their website, then ask for Mike when you call. Great guy and very friendly and helpful.

The original speaker baffle board would have some upward angle, like 4-6 degrees or more. The covering is not the same as Peavey used for any era.
It might be the original cabinet with someone's custom treatment.
But it's not important. The thing is you have a good looking NV400 amp that works and sounds great and has good value.
As long as you're happy with it, that's all that matters. |

Thanks to everyone for your help. Yes, the amp is very solid and sounds great. With that metal grill, I could play a gig with the Blues Brothers! There is even a sticker on the rear jack plate (visible in rear photo) that says "Modified by Miracle Audio"

FWIW, I think the amp looks great. It's unique. The Miracle Audio mod by John LeMay is the best upgrade to ever happen to a NV400 so I'm sure it sounds great as well.
He did one for me way back in the early 90's and it just sings.
I built a custom head/reverb only cabinet for mine and I have a variety of speaker cabinets I can use with it. |

yes, new or custom made cab..Peavey used a very ruff tolex for that 80's series of N400's...nothing like a typical Fender amp by comparison. Doesn't matter though, the amp is great !

That metal grill on the front looks very much like these nashville E115 cabinets of mine ..which I bought new about 1994-ish !!

I had a Peavey Session 400 Limited Wedge Cabinet that came with this kind of speaker grille.
I bought it used in 1998. I sold it a year later and kept the Nashville 400 that I had bought around the same time. My only complaint is that because of its shape, it was awkward to handle, required lots of space, and was rather heavy. Otherwise it was an awesome sounding amplifier with tons of power. I would have likely kept it had it been in a conventional cabinet.

| Can you read the serial # on the back? It would probably start with a number and a letter. The letter is the last digit of the decade. With the chrome hardware, it is earlier than 1995, I believe. |

The cabinet may or may not be original. The covering and speaker basket are not. Notice the back panel slat where the covering is coming loose. The covering material is not stock, as it is too smooth. Nash 400s of that era had heavier, raised tolex. I would say that this amp has been recovered and the metal grill was custom made. Either way, it looks nice, and the grill offers more protection than cloth.

I don't believe that the cabinet is original at all. Wrong grill covering, wrong tolex, front mounted speaker (as opposed to the rear mounted speakers that the amp came with), etc...
It should still be a great amp anyways.

| Those peaveys of that era have a date code on them. It will be something like "86 C" which would indicate made in 1986. |
