Anyone use a StroboFlip to tune an Emmons ST10 E9th? When I tune the first string open back to F# it seems to take a lot of turning of the screw to get the tuner to stop strobing. I know the tuner is very sensitive and maybe that just the way it is.

You tune the raise with the screw? Tune the raise at the keyhead tuner, not the changer screw, then tune open F# at the changer screw.

Maybe check the changer tuning/calibration? Follow the instruction for "Tuning the Changer":

Thanks Cliff for the link but I have already seen that one. I was wondering if anyone actually uses a StroboFlip tuner to tune the opens, raises, and lowers?

Larry - I use the Strobo-Flip with my D10 push pull. Works a treat. I use the Jeff Newman sweetner tunings for E9 and C6 for all open, raises & lowers.

It would be similar to your PP. I tune harmonically after tuning my root strings about 2 cents sharp. Trouble is when you tune the raise first the non raised note can be out. I had to do minor adjustments until both were in tune. I then wrote the raised readings down and set my strobo flip to the exact raised pitch readings when it was exactly the way I wanted it. Then just go through and tune all the raised first then go back and check the non raised strings after the raised are tuned. They usually don't change very much. This is simplified because there are lowers as well I usually do by ear. A good first check on the E neck is to press your standard two pedals down and harmonic the 4th string@ 12th fret, 6th string at the 6th fred and the 8th string at the 24th fret. They should be exactly in tune with each other by ear.

I tune my SD12 PP with the Strobo Flip without any problems. But, my first string has Bobby Boggs' arrangement to get a full tone raise, and it could be that the extra mechanical advantage that this setup provides is also making it easier to get in tune.

I tune My s10 P-P with SE9 and works great.
PS i have tried every other setting and they just don't work.

lol, It sounds like there is much to learn about tuning. I'm 64 yrs old and just changed the way I tune a couple weeks ago...go figure!

i tune the open F# on my 67 cut-tail at the LOWER screw. In other words, it is the top screw where on the other strings you would tune your lowers. Not sure who set it up that way although i remember Mr. Cass told me after he went through it that for some reason you had to set it up that way if you wanted a raise on the F#. I seem to remember someone saying something about this raise being "Weldon style"...

I could be wrong about the history of all this, its just my fuzzy recollection. Point is, if you have a raise on that string perhaps it is set up same as mine???
