Just aquired perhaps the best National Dynamic specimen available anywhere.. from forum member Jim Konrad ... probably got a 100% return on his investment, and I was glad to pay it !!(thanks Jim !).

Very clean, and sounds awesome. Great inherant "growl" even clean. Check out this Ed Gerhard arrangement of Amazing Grace (on his ND)... the "growl" at 1:43-1:44 is awesome... after a couple hours of experimenting with tone and pick attack, I've got the same tone with this ND. It's simply awesome ! Thanks Jim !

Link to ResoHangout audio example.

That's a beauty, Mitch -- it looks almost new. You're right, those pickups have some kind of magic in them. Enjoy it!

Are those string through pickups? I can't really make it out from the pictures.

The first and second photos sort of show the pup... I don't think it's string thru based on what I am seeing.

I keep coming back to this posting and staring at this thing. I am straight-up jealous as hell. Mr. Green

They're not string through, here's a '48 I was stupid enough to sell several years ago:

That one of yours is so clean it's ridiculous, I'm deeply jealous Mitch! Wink

I'm a new member and this is my first drooling post. I'm also a graphic designer as well as a newbie lap steeler -- so by looking at this beauty you know why I want one!!

I have an old Magnatone which fortunately sounds pretty good. So it's not a question of having a bad instrument and wanting a better one, it's just plain lust for an incredibly beautiful object.

Thanks (I think) for posting these images. I may frame one of them!

Cheers,
Clair

Greetings Clair, from one designer/lap steeler to another. I'm sure it won't surprise you to learn that it was the remarkable designs of the steels that first drew me to the instrument. After I played one I was hooked! Cool

Mitch's National is a beauty to be sure -- but these guitars are not hard to come by if you are looking for them. They are frequently on Ebay. Keep your eyes peeled!

Peace,
John Wilson

John / Mitch
Here's one for the books. No sooner than I had seen Mitch's pictures this morning (Jan. 11) and begun serious drool, about which I posted above, I went to ebay, where ONLY YESTERDAY was entered a National Dynamic for sale. No bids, so I bought it. The reason I could do that was that I just got a contract for a web site design and had set aside 1/2 of it for me. The rest for bills. The price I'm paying is just $15 more than my half.

This is quite amazing. (I've just posted a help question about the plug.)

Anyway, Mitch, John, et al. I can't tell you how exciting this is.

And, John, a little CDN content here: I went to UWO.

Congrats on a great purchase! I have a National as well, altho mine was made by National for Bronson in the late forties / early fifties. Mine is a '51 and it's fantastic. A real museum piece.

I see you posted on the amphenol jack -- I was about to send some info to you on the topic, however, I see a forum member actually has one to sell you. These jacks work wonderfully -- just make sure they are screwed on all the way or you'll get some nasty crackling!

When you get your guitar send us some pics!

UWOntario eh? Lots of scenery around that area to inspire an artist!

Peace,
J

Congrats Clair, you can't go wrong with a good National Dynamic! They do everything from screaming rock/blues (think David Lindley) to smooth Hawaiian tones (as demonstrated by our own Roy Thomson on several occasions),- and they're among the coolest looking lap steels ever. Smile

Hi Clair,

Here is a great sample of David Lindley playing a guitar like yours in action:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XoC87M04Us&feature=related

For this performance David is using some distortion, a volume pedal and likely playing through a boutique amp, however, the sound is unmistakable. Beautiful and expressive. Enjoy! This link may disappear again soon -- YouTube took it down for nearly a year but its been reposted.

John

Steinar / John --
Steinar, thanks for the support! The wait is going to do me in at my age! lolAnd I visited your site and listened a bit. I especially liked Northern Lights.

and
John -- thanks for the link. I listened and have a question not about the steel but your post: what's a "boutique amp"? I've never heard the term before.

(After my new baby comes, I'll move on to my next dream -- a Nashville 112 amp!)

I really appreciate the support and encouragement, and, as I said, the wait is a killer!

Cheers

Lindley has long favoured a Dumble amp when playing lap steel, which is handmade made by Alexander Dumble in SoCal. I believe the term boutique refers to a small business made-to-order type situation, as opposed to a large factory set up like Fender, Gibson, Peavy and the like....

Not to hijack this thread, but the clip John posted comes from a concert that really is a must see/listen to all who appreciate Lindley's musical touch!

Julian --
You are right -- and I guess, deep into the thread I did sort of hijack it (but it was Mitch's own fault for post the pics)! lol

Anyway, I've listened to his song about 8 or 9 times already. It's good for the soul as well as the ears.

Dynamics are a timeless piece of industrial design. As yet another graphics guy, I appreciate that aspect just as much as their sound. Good luck with yours, Claire!

Thanks Mitch --- missed your post until after they were gone, but it's no matter. They served their evil (money-diverting-purpose). Soon I'll have my own to caress. I think it might come tomorrow.
