On Sunday, February 26th, DON HELMS was inducted into the Alabama Steel Guitar Assoc. Hall of Fame and also given the honor of being their Honorary President. Also inducted into the Hall of Fame was Julian Tharpe. This was their first show and it was held in the Hank Williams Museum Theater in Montgomery, Alabama to a standing room only crowd (over 300 folks). During Don's show he donated one of his Gibson Grande Console Steel Guitars to the museum and it is on display in the museum along with Hank's memorabilia. Also on the show with Don were Ron Elliott; Russ and Laney Hicks; Lynn Owsley; Herby Wallace and Rob Parker. |

Wish I could have been there. I get chills just imagining how fantastic it was. And most deserving a reward - Don Helms and Julian Thorpe.

Don did an instrumental by himself, prior to his induction into the ASGA Hall of Fame. I believe it was "Cold, Cold Heart". He asked everyone to close their eyes, listen and see if we could hear Hank singing the song. WOW!!! It was an incredible experience. It was also very obvious how much Don misses his friends as he recognized how he remembers them daily. If anyone wasn't moved by Don's show, you need to check if your heart is beating.
What an awesome player and human being. Thanks Don for being at the ASGA show and for all your many contributions to the PSG. Your wife is a real trooper and sweetheart. |

Leslie,
Thanks for starting such a nice topic, and Tim, you're right. If that doesn't move ya, you must be dead. I am so fortunate to get to play with some of the world's great players at these shows, but I don't know if I have ever been more content than I was that day with Mr Helms. Then when you add some of my favorite players, Ron, Herby, Russ(along with my very favorite singer), it made for a great day for this steel guitar lovin' drummer. I look forward to the next time.
