my dad, Boogie Sherrard, has severe dementia and rarely can play his steel these days. He has 2 Derbys with all the knee levers and pedals. Was wondering if someone could give me an idea of the value of one so I could sell it for him. any persepective buyers would be great to hear from too!
Thank You Sincerely!

Donna....If you could possibly provide more information (photos would be ideal!) it would be extremely helpful. Number of necks, approximate age and overall condition, and number of pedals and knee levers are essential factors in determining a fair market value for the guitar(s).....Best of luck.

I have had a couple of good inquiries by email on the Derby but I wanted to share a little more info with everyone that I was able to get today when I went to my dad Boogie's. His Derby is Serial #0072.

It has woodgrain upper and black formica ft and rear. It has 8 floors and 7 knee levers. The case looks good as new to me.
With the advice of Louisville Metro Steel Guitar club President, Bob Calloway, I believe I will start with an asking price of $2800.00 but no serious offer will be ignored. Thank you all for your help in this matter!

That's a beautiful guitar.

You might want to re-list this over in the "For Sale: Instruments" section.

sorry about boogie's condition. i sympathize since i know my daughter will be in the same situation some day and i hope steel players/buyers will be respectful of her. i think you're right in the ballpark with that price. good luck. that two-tone finish is really cool and slightly unique.

thanks everyone. I have also just learned from an area friend and fellow steelman, Jerry Overstreet, that this Derby has 8 knee levers and originally belonged to Terry Crisp. Terry traded it in to Charlie Steppe and the guitar then was purchased by Jerry Overstreet and then bought by my dad. Please keep dad in your prayers and thanks everyone for your help in selling this beautiful guitar.

Hi Donna,
Sorry to hear about your dad's condition. While I do not personally know him, I always admired his playing on lead guitar and steel at the Kentucky show. My best to him and the family.

I guess this beautiful guitar should be in the
2800$ -3500$ price range.
If I had the money I bought it!

Very sorry to hear about your dad. Good luck with selling the guitar!

Thanks for the kind words everyone... We do have someone from this very forum that has expressed an interest in the Derby... he is attempting to sell one of his other guitars and we shall see... Prayers and God Bless to all the Steel Pickers of the World! That instrument amazed and delighted dad for so many years... he even built them in the way back... Cutely called them "Sho-Boog's" since he got so many parts from Shot Jackson down at ShoBud in nashville. Smile I can still remember him talking about the pedals, rods, collars, etc. that Shot gave him so he could build Sho-Boog's lol The weren't for sale of course... he just LOVED the steel guitar THAT much... had Sho-Bud's for years... God love ya Dad Smile

That #0072 guitar looks like the younger twin sister to my #0020. Sorry about your dad, Donna. I wish you the best.

Donna,
I hope you get to see those videos. They're really gonna be something you'll want to keep. You're dad plays wonderfully. Hearing him play Bitter They Are Harder They Fall should help you sell the guitar for sure. Really good tone. I played a Derby with the Dixie Chicks and it was really good sounding steel.

My dad also had dementia (Alzheimers, Sundowner's and all the other things the doctors called it). One of the saddest days of my life is the first time I walked in his room at the nursing home and he didn't know who I was. All of the fun times we had playing music together when I was a kid playing the banjo in KY and all the bluegrass festivals and everything...were gone.

It's a disease that robs you of a lifetime of memories and I wish you the best. You have my heartfelt sympathy.

God bless you and your family,

Tim

Thank you Tim. Actually I posted those videos on You Tube some time ago. Just wanted a good sounding dad to be on the internet for all to hear. I actually played music with dad also for about 40 years so this is doubly hard on me. He has very little memory of us working together. At this point, he just knows that he picked... but has no idea of the caliber of musician he was or how well thought of he is in the state of Kentucky.... I appreciate the time you took to write me a note... and I'm truly sorry about your dad... it won't be long now I know when the day comes that dad truly won't even know me... I try not to cry... he's still here... but it's such a horrible disease when your life is robbed from your mind Sad

thanks Sonny! I know a lot of people know my dad... he has played with SO many good pickers in his lifetime.... usually as a backup lead man on his "Green Darlin"... but that Steel guitar was his true love... and I'm just so thankful to have this forum to be able to talk about him Smile
