I want to thank Ricky Davis for the amazing restoration on my Marlen guitar. (check out the pics Ricky posted at topic:"Yet Another Eye Candy(not a bud this time)" posted April 20' 2003 under "Pedal Steel" of this forum)Thank you Ricky for your fine hospitality during this project. You caused my Marlen to become a living, breathing creature which produces "ear candy tone"!!! You have brought out the best in my guitar!!>>> I'm new to the forum, so want to thank everyone who posts' here, as I have learned so much about steel guitars through ya'lls comments and advice----it's really great for the beginner that I am!!! I have 3 months learning under my belt and am "BLOWN AWAY" with facination for this incredible instrument. I am just starting to grasp what Steel Guitar is all about----Deep,Deep Bottomless Water! I don't know if I will ever know just how deep--- Should keep me bizzy for a while!!! Thanx Ya'll James

Hey Ricky, been awhile now, huh?? This thread is my first post ever. I actually sat down behind this Marlen December 15, 2002. Then soon after, I sent it to Ricky to have him do his mojo on it, thus the 3 months actual play time. Wish I had that beautiful guitar yet.
This is a HUGE thankyou to my pal Ricky for mentoring me. Here's the guitar that I started on, and which triggered our friendship. Thankyou again, Ricky.

Wow my Brother; that has been a while. And what a great Friendship it has been. I saw the great passion you had for the instrument from the very start and you still have it.....>that has always been my motivation.
Thanks bro.

It is a beauty. My very first pedal steel was a single 10 Marlen, a very early one, pull release, with 5 pedals and no knees. It was the beginning of pedal steel for me in the late '60s. I made a knee lever for it. It was a beautiful looking and sounding steel. Long gone now. Jay Y. |

That really is gorgeous, James! And it's great that it got you going on your pedal steel journey.
I might be kinda stuck on one riff lately, but I'd love to know what it sounded like. Are there any recordings or videos or sound samples that you think represent the sound of that generation of Marlen well? |

Thanx Tim, but I really got out of Marlen and got into Shobud for the last 6 years. Got shobud tone in my ears! _________________ "Good judgement comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgement"~old cowboy proverb.

Yeah, I guess I do too. (Hence my "Beginner Loves Lloyd Green at Panther Hall" topic...) But I kinda feel a local connection with Marlen and I really do dig the way they look. I'll probably have to have one somewhere along the way! |

Nice guitar. Ricky is the man on Marlen's. He must've responded to a dozen e mails from me while I was learning how to set up my pull release Marlen. Another guy on the Forum, Paul Redmond, has built a few new pull release guitars. |

Well, Something for sure, some of these old Marlens were not too hard on the eyes. Here's my second Marlen I owned, a '76. This guitar was my first D-10. It was refurbished by Ricky. Great job, Ricky!!
