Is your playing progressing as fast as technology?

I think it's fun to go back in time and play some of your old practice tapes.
But while I was doing that today I realize that my playing hasn't moved forward as fast as technology.
To give you an example I just found an old version of a 2004 Band in a Box file of Nitelife that I used to practice to.
I spit my coffee out and burst into laughter so much that I just have to share that BB song with you.
Band in a Box progressed but my playing is still laughable.
This is funny enough without my playing added to it.

Interesting question....... I guess I never made too much op a point of keeping up with technology.....Occasionally I do comes across some of my earlier 'tries', and marvel at what was considered 'OK' at the time.

I'm the guy you know who said he'd never own a cell phone, and when I got one 3 years ago my kids all laughed their butts off. Their still laughing, but my wife can get me on isle 3 when she is in isle 7.

Other things I said I'd never do:

Own more then one steel.
Own more then one amp.
Have more then one computer or ever own a laptop.
Own a foreign made car.
Marry more then once.
Move out of Texas.

And live any further north then the Mason-Dixon line.

However, I don't think one improves because the band( or technology) gets better....more like the the player gets better.

That stint in the Marines that spanned 30 years, took me out of Texas.

I'll probably be the guy in the back of the buckboard all soggy and buzzard eaten, taken back to my spread near Los Fresnos, by a friend to be planted.

There is just something about Christmas lights in a mesquite or palm tree that has bring a tear to your eye.

I see pictures probably 40 years old of Mr. Emmons, Green, Chalker, and so on with an old steel and an amp with one or two others plugged into it and they sound great.

I'd trade my new Mullen and Evans amp right now to have that sound.

Maybe it's more technique than technology. But, a Peterson Flip tuner is sure handy!!!

More time travel than technology...
A dear friend videotaped my band a couple years back, and sent me a copy along with a copy of an old cassette from our very first band together circa 1976.

While there were thankfully differences in my tone, intonation and execution, I was truly amazed to hear how similar my overall approach and style has remained.
Bizarre how fully-formed my approach was at 6 months of playing time. (Or maybe, how little I've evolved in 30 years!)

I think out of all of the newer tech stuff, I enjoy my Peterson Stroboflip and Hilton volume pedals the most. Sure would hate to have to do without either of them.

I'm basically way behind in the technical department. Yes, I did upgrade to a new Zum in 2005 and I bought a used Walker Stereo Steel Amp, last year, but, I don't try to keep up with the Jones's. I've had several remarks about my old Korg tuner, like, "Man, I haven't seen one of these in years". And, " You're still using an old pot pedal? " Yeah, technology passes me by, sometimes, but, I like to use what works for me and everything still does, so, call me a curmudgeon. ( not sure about spelling )

Last year I took a 12 week college course in Sonar. The DAW from Cakewalk. A good share of the class was based on learning the different basic types of Synths used in all kinds of recording. Any sound you can think of can be made. There is a whole world of sounds I'd never thought of out there and really ripe for the picking. Haven't hear very much with steel although I'm sure some is out there. So my guess is that steel guitar has yet to really hit the big time when incorprated into this new high tech music.

The BIAB Real Tracks PSG is there but kind of tame compared to Guitar and Alto Sax.
I still don't think the folks at BIAB can think past just a little steel in the background.
I wished they would have turned him loose and let him rip a few solo type riffs like the Guitar and Sax.
Or some Boo-Wah C6 PSG in the Jazz section.
Oh well maybe in BIAB 2030.
I thought BIAB should have stolen as many of the best licks we could remember from the Icons of PSG and fixed it so we could mix and match them into a BIAB composition.
Then the Real Tracks PSG would sound exactly like about 90% of the players.
Since BIAB puts PSG parts in notations, there is no reason the other 10% couldn’t learn those licks and be as good as the rest of us. Laughing

I am lukewarm on keeping up with the latest technology of the day. I still put my faith in a good playable guitar through a good sounding amp. Technology or no, I have yet to own a rig that plays any better than I do.
