A good friend or ours Dave Giegerich passed away yesterday after battling Aplastic Anemia.
In addition to being a world-class musician he was an intelligent, witty, funny and caring person.
He loved his family and friends, and was loved by many. My condolences to his family and all who knew him.

Dave was a great guy, and one of the best players I ever knew. I'm shocked right now..I didn't expect to log into the forum and see this terrible news. We just sent each other an email about three weeks ago. He underwent a bone marrow transplant September and was recovering from that.
Dave was a master of the instrument - bluegrass, jazz, country, hawaiian, pop...you name it. His version of Under Paris Skies was my favorite. I remember the late night jams in years past at Joliet and Rick Aiello's house, where Dave would be playing until the wee hours of the morning. Those were fun times.
It's sad to see my friend has passed, but the only remote comfort I can feel is that I know his suffering is over. The steel guitar world has lost another great one. My heart pours out to his family.
Rest in Peace, Dave.

I also had the pleasure of meeting and playing with Dave at the HSGA convention in Joliet 2007. I remember him as a really sweet guy with a great sense of humor, and monster player.
He will be missed. |

When we first moved here ... we only got 3 channels on TV in our little mountain cabin.
Every Sunday morning ... I'd watch a show from Baltimore ... "Rodrick's for Breakfast".
On the final episode (show was cancelled) ... the host announced they had their faavorite band as the "house band" for that show ...
That was the first time I saw Dave ... The Hula Monster

I only got to spend one weekend with him at the 2009 ResoSummit. He struck me as a person who really enjoyed doing what he was doing (besides being really, really good at what he did).
I wish I had gotten to hear him play more than I did, but he definitely made an impact on my playing (in a good way).
My sympathies and thoughts go out to his wife, family and musical brethren.

Dave made an impression on everyone whom he met.....by his music, his personality, and his sincerity.....
His sweet playing will be missed.....

I first met Dave when we were both in our young 20's.
We worked at Elderly Instruments and played in various Bluegrass bands together. He was an amazing musician at 23 and only got better as the years went on.
One of my favorite memories was in about 1977-78. It was a Saturday afternoon. We were both working the floor at Elderly. We heard there was a Bluegrass festival about 20 miles away and they had a band competition with a $200 prize. Dave and I grabbed two fellow employees (fiddle and bass) and got in the car. On the way to the festival we named the quartet - "The Rank Strangers" and decided on our two song repertoire (Some fast three chord Bluegrass Instrumental and "In The Pines").
We got up on stage with no rehearsal and won the $200 first prize.

Dave had sort of mischievous personality in a sense that when he spoke, you weren't sure if there was a punchline to follow. Lot of fun to be around.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Dave and getting to know him a little at the Joliet HSGA shows.
He wanted me to show him how to play Ana Lani e - me!? He could play rings around me, and everyone at Joliet, but still was interested in my version of a song.
We always had good conversations about the music business and I learned some great lessons from him.
darn it - gone too young!

It's tough to know he's gone. I'll really miss Dave's company and his music.

That is sad news, I hung out with Dave a few times at the Birchmere.
He was the kind of person that enrichens your life.

Just returned to the US and am shocked to hear of this sad news. Dave was a wonderful man and proponent of the steel guitar, a man of few words but with lots of steel guitar magic, and a great sense of humor. An unassuming and humble man.
Fondly remember jamming with him at Joliet on more than one occasion, and his quiet manner and great jamming etiquette. I was the "cameraman" in Gerald Ross' Youtube video, Joliet 2007, posted here of "Kansas City Kitty".
Can't make it to the memorial service and celebration today due to the distance, but wish i could. My sincerest condolences to the family.
There are not many like him, he will be sorely missed.

The memorial was sad, musical and even very funny at times.
Dave's many performing groups were represented:
Dede Wyland and "Mama Tried"
Smooth Kentucky
The Hula Monsters of course, who ended the memorial with a melancholy, achingly sweet acoustic version of "Aloha Oe", lyrics sung in Hawaiian and English.
Carter Giegerich played a charming Hawaiian lullaby on solo dobro.
Other musical contribution by list member David Whitaker and His Legend, Mike Auldridge who played a charming solo medley of "Till There Was You" (from The Music Man) and "How Great Thou Art" on 8 string.
Bob Perilla and The "Big Hillbilly Bluegrass Band" kicked things and then the most amazing thing as the Marylad State Boychoir sang several hymns, just the most wonderful uplifting vocals you'd ever want to hear. Just heavenly.
Reminisces from Bob Perilla, Pam McLeod, Steve Giegerich and others.
I'm sure I've missed something important. The church was packed, 600-800 maybe, dunno.
I chatted with Pam for a bit and thanked her for keeping us posted. We talked about Dave's unfinished project. There is some movement. I'm sure others will announce things at the appropriate times. Thanks for the hug Pam.

The joint was really jumpin as Dave might have said.
A bunch of people I missed there. Would have like to have met you Rick. We actually live fairly close.

Dave gave me my first dobro lesson ('95?) and introduced me to Common Ground Reso Workshop which I attended 2 years (first with Stacy Phillips and then Mike Auldridge). This experience really moved me along my development path on dobro and steel in general. Dave was a super cool guy, an excellent teacher and a fantastic player. Aloha to a real Hula Monster. The 25th Annual WAMMIES (Washington Area Music Association Awards) were held in Falls Church, Va last night ... and Dave won both:
Best Bluegrass Instrumentalist ... & ... Best Country Instrumentalist !!!
