I am recording a new project with New Roots Duo - myself on acoustic lap steel and Ben Woolman on acoustic baritone. We are releasing this collection as an incremental record (singles) through cdbaby. The first single is "Chicken in the City". It will be available 1/1/11 through cdbaby, but feel free to download it now (for free) here. The rest of the singles will be released monthly.
We welcome any comments.

I'm amazed.
The constant, creative interplay between the two instruments just keeps the entire tune alive, and my ears wanting to hear what the next phrase will bring.
I love the stereo panning. Mixed just perfectly.
Please tell us about the instruments, tunings, etc.
Maybe even microphones, and the recording set up?
I'll be buying your tracks. Keep'em coming.

It sounds really good to me, Dan. Thanks for sharing this track.
I would suggest that you put the full ID tag information in the MP3 file so people will know whose music they're listening to.

Thanks for listening, and for the comments and questions.
I am playing a hollowneck built by Troy Marcio in open D. Ben is playing a Tacoma baritone in standard tuning - down a fourth to B.
The recording was done in my studio. We are sitting in the same room - pretty close together. We are using a pair of Neumann km-184 mics (placed close to the instruments), running through a pair of Summit 2BA-221 preamps. Tim Snow did the mix - he does amazing work.
I added the ID tag to the mp3 (thanks Brad). Any downloads from here will have the artist/album info.

Yes, I love the 184s - worth every penny. Since you asked about the software, I will continue the chain from the summit pres. I am running into the Lynx 2 sound card (again, worth every penny). I am using Logic Pro 8 on a mac G5. For mixing and mastering, Tim Snow uses Logic and likes the PSP plug-ins, and the Alesis Masterlink for the final product.

That is amazing- it sounds really nice for a 192kbps MP3 file! Will you be selling CD's after releasing all of the singles? I never buy MP3's because CD's sound so much better to me. Would it be possible to make them available as FLAC files for perhaps $1.29 per tune? FLAC stands for "Free Lossless Audio Codec" and files in that format sound identical to the CD. (Wolfgang's Vault has been offering live shows in FLAC format for a few years now, at roughly 30% more than MP3's.)
I love how Ben's baritone works so well with your Hawaiian acoustic! You each have your own space, in range as well as tone.

Steve,
I do plan on packaging all the singles together on a CD when they are all out. However, we definitely are selling more downloads and less CDs these days. It is kind of odd how hot hi-def, blu-ray, 3-D movie/TV is right now, while most people are settling for less in audio. It is good to hear people cheering for the CD. I do like the FLAC options as well. May ultimately offer both options with this project.

What a dynamic piece of music. Hearing the discreet dialogue between the two unusual instruments is easy with the great recording technique. At about 1:20 the Marcio sings out in a startlingly human voice. The buttery overtones around 1:50 are sweet. The harmonics at 2:39 are welcome. The clean bar use keeps the melodic lines mellow. The alternate notes at 3:09 and beyond are graceful and tricky. The multiple hollowneck string intonation intermixed with single lead lines is delightful. Absolutely thrilling. I Listened to the recording 4 times in a row to absorb the beauty.
Max Lasser would love this recording.
