An article titled 100 YEARS OF HAWAIIAN MUSIC is covered in the Honolulu Magazine. I think you will enjoy it.

I would have liked to see more emphasis given to the Hawaiian Steel Guitar, the signature sound of Hawaiian. Nevertheless it is an interesting article.

Here are some of the Steel Guitarist pictured:

I believe this is David Keli'i on the steel guitar.

Jules Ah See the featured steel guitarist (center) with Jake Keli'ikoa.

Jules Ah See playing his Lyric Magnatone with Alfred Apaka and the Hawaiian Villagers in the Tapa Room.

Gabby Pahinui and family playing in their Waimanalo home backyard.

If I'm correct Don, that Gabby pic predates the formation of the SONS OF HAWAI'I....?

The Sons Of Hawaii began in 1960.
They played at the Sandbox on Sand Island Access Road.

The photo with Gabby and sons, with Atta Isaacs and Joe Gang was taken at the Pahinui residence on Bell Street in Waimanalo. I believe this pic to be taken somewhere around the early to mid 70's.

Center steeler is obviously Barney, flanked by Sonny and Jake.

But I could never be as wrong as Keoki's call! Razz

Thanx for the great pix, Don.
I got to examine the little Epi that David is shown with. Had his penciled signature inside.

Ron,
You have an eagle eye. Thanks for the careful observation.

The picture was so small that I was not careful in my observations. I got a magnifying glass and surely the center steel player is Barney.

I believe now that the two steel guitarists with Barney are Joe Custino and Eddie Pang.

The steel guitarists on Hawaii Calls programs were truly phenomenal.

And I hope the owner is doing well!

BTW, I saw it with the Kelii mojo fully intact, pre- restoration, due to some termite damage. Rather jaw dropping.

Derrick comments that

That is true, but they did not stay there long. By the mid 1960's they were playing in a night spot right next to the famous Canlis restaurant in Waikiki. It was at the corner where Kalakaua and Ala Moana Boulevard intersect. I wish that I could remember the name of the night spot, but memory fails.

Just a little bit of history.

Aloha,
Don

Wasn't it at The Sandbox that Eddie booted Gabby out of the band?

Love the bass player in the Pahinui picture.

Things must have been pretty bad to fire Gabby. I'll have to pull out my copy of Hawaiian Son and refresh my memory.

That for Hawaiians was not an uncommon way to play the bass. They played it that way even on stage, not just backyard stuff.

Besides finishing off patron's drinks for them, Gabby'd usually return to his stage duties on his time clock, Eddie as a professional reached (beyond) his limit.
I see the move as a fortunate one from the listener's pov, it greatly expanded the renaissance roots palate and momentum.

Gabby was still in the band when they moved from the Sandbox to a Waikiki night spot by Canlis Restaurant. They were playing in this Waikiki night spot in the mid 1960's on until they disbanded. I know this for a fact because I went to see them there during this time period.

I believe Gabby was not invited back when Eddie Kamae reorganized the Sons Of Hawaii in the early 1970's.

A little more of the history.
