I have been using closed back cabs with front ports for sometime with a rack system and cab for an amp head. The reason for it was I started with that and have never changed. Can someone who has used both give a report on what you feel is the difference in the sound. I know this is subjective but I would like to hear other opinions. I am giving some thought to getting some new cabs and I would like some other thoughts. I have tried to do a search on the subject but have had no luck. |

Closed back have more bass response..
You can get some with a removable back section that will convert to open or closed.
I have Walker cabs w/ JBL D-130s
They are a little more punchy than an open back but not a lot in my opinion. _________________ MSA 12 String E9th/B6th Universal.

Pretty much as a rule a tuned port closed cabinet will increase bass response and an infinite baffle or open back cab is middier with less high frequency rolloff. This is pretty much sound re-enforcement 101 stuff. If u want a flatter sound u usually use a sealed and properly damped acoustic suspension cabinet. Their main drawback is they require more amp power to acheive comparable sound pressure levels.Sealed cabs are found mostly in hi-fi sound playback equipment as opposed to live, pro audio sound re-enforcement stuff |

I can't recall any Fender Amps with closed backs. In the 40's, Gibson's high end Amp had a closed back with the Bass outlet on the front of the Amp below the speaker. The tubes and transformers were on a platform at the top of the Amp that lifted out of the Amp case. I think open back Amps had ore "bite" to them. IMHO |

On one stage that I occasionally play on, the space is so limited that my open back NV-112 goes right up against the wall. There is a marked difference when I play there. It is much more beefy sounding, without any noticable loss of highs. _________________ LeGrande II, Nash. 112, Fender Twin Tone Master, Session 400, Harlow Dobro, R.Q.Jones Dobro |

have had several amps both open & closed , tube & non-tube . ALWAYS enjoyed a closed cab sound more.Found a mellower , clearer , more consistent & controllable tone with a closed cab. _________________ EQUIPMENT:

I had a blackface Dual-Showman with a closed back cabinet. Weren't Band-Masters closed back cabs as well? |

Thanks guys for the replys. All combo amps I have had were open back. Only when I started using a rack did I ever use a closed back cab. I have found the closed back with either 15 or 12 inch speakers have a really beefy sound. |

Do closed back cabinets typically just have port holes in the speaker baffle, or do they use port tubes? |

I like the sound of an open back in a small club setting. I think the rear reflected output off the back of the stage adds a little "depth".
In larger settings, especially with a mic., I find you sometimes get a better mix by blocking the rear with a rack cover, or something similar. I know putting the open side toward the rear of the amp allows some of the sound to direct forward toward the player. |
