Jason Lollar makes some absolutely fantastic steel guitar pickups. Not the cheapest in the world.

Depending on your string spacing, you may be able to adapt "regular" guitar pickups for your steel. I like the sound of P-90s, especially the "underwound" models like the Lollar '50's wind.

When I converted my old Gibson lap steel to 7-strings, I really wanted a Lollar repro of the original, but I just couldn't afford it. Jerry Wallace of True Tone Pickups custom made a pickup for me for less than half the price of the Lollar. It's a great sounding, pickup with a big, warm tone, and I'm completely satisfied with it.

Try Stewart-MacDonald's site and you'll find lots of pickup choices and a range of prices. Excellent company.

You are in good shape if it's a 6 string lap. Most any guitar pickup will work as long as it fits. No reason to spend much money and you have thousands of options. Look at the pickup and figure out what kind it is. Then look up that type of pickup and you are good to go. Like if its a fender strat type pickup you can find all sorts of retrofits at Seymore Duncan alone. Most guitar repair shops have boxes of spare pickups laying around that they will sell for super cheap and may be what you are looking for.
