I had a single of Bob Crosby , on one side was Minnie the Moocher and on the other was Kickin the Gong Around .
Whenever I seach for this all I come up with is Cab Calloway .
Bob Crosby did a great version and I would love to hear it again , has anyone heard of this recording ?

No sign of it at Rhapsody.com, which has 578 Bob Crosby titles.

No sign of it at the Library Of Congress, which has over 400 listings for Bob Crosby.

Not definitive, but??

I learned that "Kickin' The Gong Around" is a Harold Arlen tune---whooda thunk it?

Are you referring to a 78 rpm?

When did you first have it in your hands? 1940s?

I have a few Bob Crosby CDs at home. He always had a great band behind him, even though he was just a frontman (didn't do anything except smile--after all he was Bing's brother). Guys like Matty matlock, Eddie miller, Ray Bauduc, Yank Lawson, Muggsy Spanier drove that band. They had an arranger and another fellow who actually led the band.

Long ago I had a record of a band called "The South Rampart St. Paraders" which was made up of much the same personnell: Matty Matlock, Eddie Miller, etc,...but it included George Van Eps on guitar. It was some of the best New Orleans jazz I've ever heard. Sadly, it's long gone. One of the cuts I remember was Van Eps playing his "My Monday Date".
If you ever see a copy of it around, don't miss it.

John:

Here’s info on that group---led by Eddie Condon.

http://www.answers.com/topic/the-rampart-street-paraders

The material has been reissued:

http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/store/artist/album/0,,1130322,00.html

It's a boxed set on Mosaic--Bud Freeman, George Wettling, Bobby Hackett, Matlock, South Rampart Street Paraders, etc. Got to be a barn-burner.

You can buy disc 5, The South Rampart Street Paraders disc, here, for 3 bucks:

Bob was just a "frontman"? No way! He was a fine vocalist as well as band leader. Of course he wasn't on the "A" list like his brother Bing but he held his own pretty dang well. Years ago he had a daytime TV show on CBS I believe which also featured his daughter Cathie and the Modernaires from the old Glen Miller band. I loved his recording of "Big Noise Blew In From Wannetka" which was basically the upright bass player with the drummer hitting the bass strings with his sticks and someone whistling the melody. Pretty ingenious thing they had going there All that said, ol' Bob deserves his place in the "Swing Era" as he paid is dues.....JH in Va.

True, Jerry--he did sing well. But he really wasn't the bandleader or arranger, so in essence he was a frontman. Not to discredit him, because like you said, he paid his dues. Being Bing's brother sure did help him, too.

This particular record was on a 45 single out of the collection of parents of a friend . When we were playing it was around 1968 .
It certainly made an impression on me .
At the time I remember there was another record by Grady Martin and the Slew foot five . I may be getting the two confugulated but I don't think so . I don't remember what was on the Grady Martin record .

I can confirm that there was a recording with Kickin' The Gong Around on one side and Minnie The Moocher on the other.

And it was a UK release--on Brunswick 05022.

But it was by Cab Calloway.

Not sure, but I'd guess your memory is fooling you--particularly since no one can find evidence that Bob Crosby ever recorded those 2 songs.
