as you all know, us beginners always have to mess around with the instrument to fight the frustrations that go along with the learning process... 
anyhow after listening to the pickup comparison on the carter side

many times i found out that i liked the E 66 best.
i know many don`t like it, i ordered one anyhow.
so i put it on my guitar the other day to replace my GFI II which isn`t bad i think.
i also got me a set of George L cables and plugged them in.
first i was shocked how bright the sound of this setup was, my GFI is already bright
acoustically with the steel changers 
like a real mean telecaster on a trebly twin...
but much more clarity and a very nice sound overall. after some adjusting back and forth and plugging the guitar into the low gain of the amp i`m getting real happy about the sound!

| I wonder if it is the George L's cables rather than the E66? The GFI II is basically an E66 and what is on our GFI Expo S-10. The George L's cables make a big difference over some cables. I use George L's cables exclusively on my Franklin D-10. |

thanks jack, yes the cables do make some difference, thats what everybody told me before.
as for the pickup, i know that the GFI 2 is basically an E66 but has more winds, i measured mine at about 17,5, the E 66 had 16,5 k ohms.
i don`t say the GFI 2 is bad, just the clearer sound is more what i like.
check the pickup comparison, the guy there plays real great and one can hear exactly
how the pickups vary.  |

The comparisons on the Carter site are with a Carter steel guitar, which has a different construction than a GFI. In additon, they do not have the GFI II pickup so there is no comparison available.
A 1K difference in the DC Resistance should not have any real noticeable difference in the sound.
I'm not interested in changing the pickup in our GFI, just commenting. |

if you really want clear and great string separation, go to the GFI -3 pickup, i was blowen away with mine...

My '76 Emmons S-10 came with an E66, when I bought it.
I bought an Emmons single coil pickup to replace it with, but I love the sound of the E66 on that guitar so much that I can't bring myself to swap them.
I did notice that I like the tone & clarity of the E66 when it is adjusted lower on the guitar, rather than higher.
I'm a newbie to PSG, but not to tone.

of course sound is a matter of taste!
i`m a newbie too playing for 2 and a half years so many others got much more experience!
anyway i like this pickup so far, it definately added some bite and has less ohmpf!
hard to describe...
yes mike i checked the GFI III and the alumitone at the GFI factory in missouri in 2009, but propably was too green to judge them back then... |

Norbert, you just stated what matters the most. You are happy with it!
You can go on and on with different pickups, amps, settings, strings, cables, etc. Then you wind up spending much more time experimenting and comparing than actually playing. I am all too familiar with this affliction!
You have one of the finest guitars with a very good pickup! Enjoy!

I remember putting the E66 in my MCI D10 Rangexpander to replace the stock Barcus Berry pickups and the difference was like night and day ... that guitar came to life with the E66 !  Obviously not the same comparison, but the right pickup can make a big difference on an individual guitar.
