Hopefully a simple question.
When tuning 1st string to D instead of the more common G what gauge string is best used?

here are some common gauges used in sets with a D on top. http://steelguitarmusic.com/strings/C6.html

I'm still using a G, but it would appear that 15 is popular, other pros seem to prefer 16, or 17. Looks like PF likes an 18 ga. I guess it depends on the changes one requires.

"Best" is a pretty subjective term.
Some go as low as
.015 (Tommy White)
.016 (John Hughey)
and as high as
.017 (Buddy Emmons)
.018 (Paul Franklin)

I'd say it depends on the overall balance and feel of the rest of the string set.
That being said, here is a string gauge guide that lists "D" as .017.
