item # 110470617713

I asked Jody and he said the s/n was 1950's and he didn't think that color was original. The way it's described, it sure sounds like the real deal. Any comments?

Fender never made any red steel guitars. That is a guitar that was painted at some point in its life.

Hi,
It's an early (1953-54) series Stringmaster for sure. Also there's a really large step between the first and second necks. From that I'm inferring that the second neck is actually a third neck and that the third neck is actually a fourth neck. I think that this guitar started off as a Quad and lost it's original second neck at some point in its checkered career.

Regards,
Jonny G.

I think Jonny G. is correct, a former quad. The finish looks sketchy too, although I seem to remember Leon McAuliffe had a red Stringmaster on one of his album covers.

I heard that Leon's red guitar was the only factory red Stringmaster ever built. Leon wanted a red one and Leo went ahead and did a one-off just for him. It would have been easy since Fender just used car paint but it's true that it wasn't normally offered in red. I've often wondered about because I remember Fender offering custom ordered colors on their Strats,Jazzmasters etc in the mid 60s and wonder what would have been the response if one had ordered a Stringmaster in say Sea-Foam Green or Lake Placid Blue - two of their standard colors....

Iv'e seen the Champions in a blue color so it's not too far fetched that they could have done a few Stringmasters in special order colors.

Zoom in on the places where the red has scraped/chipped off. Looks like blond finish under there to me. On a Mac, hold down the control key, and zoom in with your scroll wheel. Might work on pc comps too.

Andy, Champion lap steels were available in blue (which may appear green due to fading) and yellow pearloid covering. None of the Fender steel guitars were ever produced with a red finish. I've never seen any Fender steel guitar that had a red finish that wasn't refinished.

I haven't seen the Leon McAuliffe guitar in question, so I can't speak to whether or not that was the only red steel guitar Leo Fender ever made.

Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars is pretty definitive on this. Perhaps someone will come along with some factory paperwork indicating that such a guitar was made and shipped from Fullerton, but somehow I doubt it. None of the catalogs that I've seen indicate that such a color was available.

Jody,
I'd read somewhere that Dupont Duco was used. Would that have been a bit later? My '57 Strat is the same color blue as a Cadillac Eldorado convertible of that year.
Best,

I think what is also amazing about Kayton, he has remained 'loyal' to that RED Custom throughout his career. I cannot recall seeing pics of him playing any other guitar. Most of us have quite a few guitars in our collection, and as for me, I enjoy all of them ! Kayton indeed should be in the Hall of Fame !

I have an old red dual eight that I can't find any hint of the original color. I took it completely apart to repair the tuners and send the pickups off to be rewound. At that point I went over every part except removing the fret boards. It's missing the Fender decal on the front so I'm pretty sure it's not the original paint. Even so, whoever refinished it did a great job at removing the old finish

One More Time.........There have been no other stringmasters done in RED, other than Leon McAuliffe's..the other custom painted steel was for my friend the late Carl West who was an employee of Fender and his Fender 2000 was painted by Mr.Fender in Lake Placid Blue....end of story. Smile

I painted my Dual Pro white. If they are too beat up, full of nicks etc, paint is one way to go. That is, unless an ugly beat-up guitar has character that some folks like. I tried an original type finish, but it was a waste of time on this one.

Get yourself some cans of spray paint and you can have any color Dual Pro you want. Very Happy

If I wanted a silver Fender and Leo wouldn't make one I'd just change the color myself. Respraying a painted instrument is the easiest job there is. Anyone can do it. Winking

Yeah, that's about right, just depends on the condition and what's desired. I even had all the parts re-chromed on the Dual Pro. Looking back, I should have left it as-is. Waste of money I think. It's worth about what the plating cost, and it's seldom used.

I've got about a 1959 Fender 1000 in the closet which in the mid 70's I stripped down and painted it an ANTIQUE GREEN and then coated it with Spar Marine Varnish. I put new fretboards on it and it looked Great ! My wife had been antiquing a Dresser and I said hey! that might look good on my Guitar. I will break it out and post a picture of it. This was a Guitar that came from the Factory courtesy of Bill Carson and Leo Fender after my 4-necked Wright Custom
burned up with the Jubilee Ballroom in Baldwin Psrk, Ca.

I know what you mean, Billy. Most of my instruments came near to being burned up in the East Bay Hills Firestorm a few years back. Fortunately my house was saved. Cool

Do you have a picture of your Antique Green Fender ?

Jody! So good to hear your voice on the forum again, man! 'Hope you're doing well. Happy holidays to the Knight of Tweed. If Mr. Carver says "only one red Fender", you can take that to the bank.

Jody asked me to delete some of the postings he made in this discussion, so if it seems a little disjointed, that's probably why.
