I recently got a double cd set on Charly called Kings of Western Swing, it's mostly recordings from the mid 40's and early fifties and there's some grest steel playing on quite a few of the tracks but no mention of the players themselves.

Does anyone know who played steel for these bands:

Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies
Cliff Bruner & His Boys
The Hi-Flyers
Shelly Lee Alley & The Alley Cats
Hank Penny & His Radio Cowboys

It'd be good to have some info on the steel players from these recording so's I can find some more of their work.

That's a great collection of Western Swing! The copy I got has extensive liner notes in the first CD sleeve; the second CD contains just a listing of songs.
Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies featured Bob Dunn on steel guitar.
Cliff Bruner & His Boys also included Dunn; this is the band he joined after the death of Milton Brown.
I didn't see anything about the The Hi-Flyers, nor could I find anything in my other reference books.
The steel player for Shelly Lee Alley & The Alley Cats was apparently Ted Daffan, who went on to front his own band and write "Truck Driver's Blues" and "Born To Lose" among other hits.
Hank Penny & His Radio Cowboys featured the steel playing of Sammy Forsmark on "Hesitation Blues", but his later recordings featured the steel guitar of Noel Boggs.
