Erv,I'm specifically interested in the Special 6.It weighs in at about 20# is tube amp or head.Coupled w/a neo speaker in a cab and a rp 150 to me would be great in small rooms.Young guys like you don,t worry bout weight, I have to.Just was wondering how sound is.Heard demo w/lead guitars but only crunch sounds.Like to know how a steel would sound. Bert,
Thanks for the compliment but I was born in "The Land Of Enchantment" 72 years ago.
BTW: Peralta is in what part of the State? |

Still got 10 on you. When I returned from Nam was stationed at Holloman in Alamagordo later transferred to Kirtland in Abq,bought a lot in Peralta 15 miles south of Abq.Its not much but it's paid for. After fighting the weight of D10 BMI and U12 Sierra I decided on a Williams U12 from Bill Rudolph up around your way.30# plus 17# case.I have since split guitar and custom case 28# and pedalboard legs and rods case 18#.Can't go any lighter unless I take the strings off but this I can manage.Next split NV112 head and SGBB to upright case I designed and made 25# into a SICA neo 12" from Ken Fox 17#.Still trying to lighten amp I have aGK mb200 but not real happy w/the sound. Can't put my finger on a description of the sound, hollow, never knew what "honk" is.It seems this VHT might work, tubes simple no effects but can't find anyone who has used one w/steel.Bert ps it will be 62 here today we've had 1/4" of snow already hehe |

Bert,
Are you down around Belen?
I have a couple of cousins living in Santa Fe and one of them has a son that lives in Belen.
Do you do some business with Frenchy?
PS: One Winter we were living in Albuquerque and I took some lessens fram a place called the "Hannan Conservatory of Music" on the east side of town.
Ever hear of it? |

The Special 6 is a 6 watt amp, in the same power category as a Fender Champ or tweed Princeton. That is not enough power for most steel guitar purposes. Even if you want an overdriven/distorted sound it would probably not be adequate for a gig with a drummer without being mic'd through the P.A. |

Erv no, halfway between Abq and Belen and no and no. John Thanx for comment. No do not want distortion or crunch or whatever some lead players like.I play several small rooms no drums that I would like something lite. Other times the NV 112 is fine mic'd or not as needed On the surface at about 20# sounds like it might fit but wanted a comment by a user before I separated some money from my wallet. |

Bert, you might look into the Fender Frontman series. I just got a fire sale deal on a little Frontman 15R to use in my teaching studio and it sounds surprisingly good. A Frontman 25R might be just the ticket. Not a tube amp but probably good for PSG.

Solid state amps are generally likely to be lighter in weight than tube amps of equivalent power, due to the extra transformers required in a tube amp. |

VHT are a new-owned company and have diverted from the previous Freyette (owner) ways. Still great, just different.
The high quality S6 will no doubt surprise many, and indeed looks to be the new mini king, especially with it's mod-friendly set up and minus $200 tag. You can quickly mix and match tubes without much biasing concerns to find your personal sweet spot.
It comes out of the box with lots of clean headroom and can keep up with 'sensible' drummers.
Lot's of promise with this one. |

I have a VHT Sig:X, that I love, and I have nothing but good things to say about Fryette. I bought the head from West LA Music, where it had been a demo, and I wasn't getting the sound I wanted out of it, so, after reading the website, I swapped out the power tubes for some that I had in my collection (because I don't know what I'm doing and I'm unafraid to do it). It worked for a few minutes and then blew something. Uh-oh, I had to play the amp that night at the Key Club, on the Strip.
I called over to Fryette, in Glendale, told them what I did, that I live a half an hour away and I needed to play it that night. They said bring it over.
Stephen Fryette met me at the door and asked me what I did and why I did it. I told him it was for steel guitar and I wanted a scooped sound. He said, give me a half hour, and took it away.
1/2 an hour later he comes out with the amp, I ask him what can I give him and he asks for a token payment to cover the tubes that needed replacing.
I will sing his praises to my dying day. |
