I recorded a version of Speedy West's "Steelin' Moonlight" last using a Clinesmith D-8 console prototype with metal necks. This guitar sounds so alive! Anyway, this is my tribute to Speedy and Jimmy, whose music means so much to me.
Steelin' Moonlight
I love to play this tune and it is so gorgeous with a volume pedal, which I normally use, but left out for purposes of the video. You should listen to Speedy's mastery of it. Another note: for any of you bugged by the sound of your picks on the strings, Speedy's pick are loud as all get out on his recording! Don't feel so bad about it then.
If you are interested, I have made a package of tab/notation (both pdf and Tabledit), as well as a video, and backing track for Steelin' Moonlight and it will be available shortly, as I render the video to a manageable download size. The tuning used is A6, but note that it is for 6 and 8 string steel--strings 7 and 8 never get played in this one. The tab/notation is really nice for this tune; I put a lot of time into it and it is solid. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links

Thanks guys. Dave, it makes me happy just to see you post anything, let alone a compliment. I think about you daily.
Mark, your steel guitar stand has definitely improved my quality of life. I can't thank you enough for making them.
Chuck, I'll see you in Dallas, God willing.
Todd Clinesmith is the man! That D-8 console sounds phenomenal and this is the first recording I've been able to use it on thus far. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Great tune, Mike!
I appreciate the large notation on the tab. And the video is really nice with the two angles. I'd have to say it's the best $4.95 I ever spent! |

That great, Mike!
This tune has been on my wish list for a while and now I don't have any excuse for putting it off. You'll have my order before the day's out!
Thanks for your hard work and dedication, not to mention your willingness to share you considerable talent!

Hi,
Thanks Mike. Beautiful playing and just what I needed.
The Clinesmith sounds fabulous, too. Kudos to Todd.
Keep up the great work, both of you.
And only $4.95! Money well spent.
All the best,
Bob |

I just downloaded steelin.zip from Mike's link (after paying for it, of course). It's VERY well done. It includes the following:
- steelin_moonlight_large.pdf (a large format PDF of the tablature)
- steelin_moonlight.pdf (a regular sized PDF for those who still have good eyes)
- steelin_moonlight.mp3 (Mike's version of the song as previously linked)
- steelin_moonlight.tef (the TabEdit version of the song)
- steelin_moonlight.txt (an explanation of everything)
- steelin_rhythm.mp3 (the rhythm track alone)
- steelin.mov (a QuickTime movie showing Mike playing the song from two different angles)
Highly recommended. Even playing the TabEdit file was informative. I look forward to learning this song and amazing my band mates! _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

The tune is well played and Mike is very thorough
..I can tell. It would be a real good lesson because
the chords show up in the strangest of places.
Opens new doors. Sure miss Speedy.
Mike.. another I always liked was "West Of Samoa".
Haven't tried it yet but it's on my list.
Are you familiar with it??
Topic for another day...sorry to get off the track.

Hey Mike:
That's the same "kit" that JI Allison of the Crickets used on many famous tracks. You are in good company!
Great work on the Speedy tune. I'm gonna download today. Thanks for your passion and teacher's soul. |

Mike,
This sounds great. Your guitar playing has a real Jimmy Bryant vibe too.
I look forward to hearing the next tunes that are inspiring you.
You are a great asset to the steel community.

Thanks, Todd!
Actually, I truly appreciate your outstanding craftsmanship. It makes playing the non-pedal steel that much more fun.
Thanks for the good words and support everyone. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

A cool tune and worthy of analysis and study, Mike. Speedy's playing hasn't been decoded very much compared to say, Jerry Byrd's.
There are many years of study and pro experience behind this very generous download. Look at what Mike is giving you for 5 bucks - heck, you've spent more on a disposable lunch from McDonalds. |

Thanks, Andy. Not looking to get rich from this, that's for sure.
Speaking of Speedy, next time you hear Jimmy Boyd's recording of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" (original recording), listen carefully for Speedy and his Bigsby--some very sweet playing by him is great consolation for having to endure the vocals. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Purdy, Mike.
Where did you get the Tab from?
Great tune to listen to, many of Speedy's slow tunes were!
