I recorded a version of Speedy West's "Steelin' Moonlight" last using a Clinesmith D-8 console prototype with metal necks. This guitar sounds so alive! Anyway, this is my tribute to Speedy and Jimmy, whose music means so much to me.
Steelin' Moonlight
I love to play this tune and it is so gorgeous with a volume pedal, which I normally use, but left out for purposes of the video. You should listen to Speedy's mastery of it. Another note: for any of you bugged by the sound of your picks on the strings, Speedy's pick are loud as all get out on his recording! Don't feel so bad about it then.
If you are interested, I have made a package of tab/notation (both pdf and Tabledit), as well as a video, and backing track for Steelin' Moonlight and it will be available shortly, as I render the video to a manageable download size. The tuning used is A6, but note that it is for 6 and 8 string steel--strings 7 and 8 never get played in this one. The tab/notation is really nice for this tune; I put a lot of time into it and it is solid.

Todd Clinesmith is the man! That D-8 console sounds phenomenal and this is the first recording I've been able to use it on thus far.

I just downloaded steelin.zip from Mike's link (after paying for it, of course). It's VERY well done. It includes the following:
- steelin_moonlight_large.pdf (a large format PDF of the tablature)
- steelin_moonlight.pdf (a regular sized PDF for those who still have good eyes)
- steelin_moonlight.mp3 (Mike's version of the song as previously linked)
- steelin_moonlight.tef (the TabEdit version of the song)
- steelin_moonlight.txt (an explanation of everything)
- steelin_rhythm.mp3 (the rhythm track alone)
- steelin.mov (a QuickTime movie showing Mike playing the song from two different angles)
Highly recommended. Even playing the TabEdit file was informative. I look forward to learning this song and amazing my band mates!

The tune is well played and Mike is very thorough
..I can tell. It would be a real good lesson because
the chords show up in the strangest of places.
Opens new doors. Sure miss Speedy.
Mike.. another I always liked was "West Of Samoa".
Haven't tried it yet but it's on my list.
Are you familiar with it??

A cool tune and worthy of analysis and study, Mike. Speedy's playing hasn't been decoded very much compared to say, Jerry Byrd's.
There are many years of study and pro experience behind this very generous download. Look at what Mike is giving you for 5 bucks - heck, you've spent more on a disposable lunch from McDonalds. |

Speaking of Speedy, next time you hear Jimmy Boyd's recording of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" (original recording), listen carefully for Speedy and his Bigsby--some very sweet playing by him is great consolation for having to endure the vocals.
