I've owned both models, and they sound equally good to me.

I have a D-11 9 & 8 built in 1991. Still looks and sounds great through either my Session 500 or Webb. I haven't a reason to update other than maybe a G2.

I had a 96 pre royal - sounded very good - stayed in tune well.
I also had a late 90's RP - stayed in tune very well, to me, the tone was dark.
As a 6 stringer for 30 years, to me, the Royal Precision sounded like a les paul trying to play country music. Just too thick, .. not real sure how to explain it.

It's very hard to go wrong with any Mullen of any age or model.

I have had both,to me it's the Pre RP that has the better tone, but my prp is lacquer finish which makes a LOT of difference in tone I think,Charlie Stepp said that was in my head..ha..But I have several friends with RP models that don't have the cabinet drop mine has, mine is BAD on cab.drop...ok thats my 2cents worth,,
Charlie...
