Well... I've just started working with a young "Texas Country" duo named Rosehill. Their first single was number 14 last week on the Texas music charts. I really enjoy their CD. It was produced by Radney Foster and recorded in Nashville at Ronnies Place and Omni Sound. It was mixed at Devils River Music in Nashville and at Verge Studio. Steve Fishell did the steel work on the recordings. The guys are pretty darn talented. Their management contacted me to play their larger venue gigs. I was a bit surprised because these are some 25 y/o guys and I'm an old fart. Funny.. the mgt said they specifically wanted an older steel player who was experienced. It should be interesting! They play mostly the college venues in Texas, but do have some out of state gigs coming up.
You can check out the guys website at www.rosehill-live.com

I've been learning their catalog the last few days. They do a show that is about 2 hours long. Almost all originals. The only covers are some old Neil Young songs and I think an old "The Band" tune.

Steve Fishell's work on the CD is understated elegance. Nothing flashy (whew!) but some good solid steel work. I think I'm going to use my Emmons for this gig. Still undecided on what amp rig to take out. Their sound guy favors me going direct from my Profex II. Since I'll be doing some utility guitar and possibly banjo and keys, I'll go with what ever is easiest to transport.

Did a show rehearsal last nite. I of course made a ton of mistakes! Regardless, I play my first gig with the guys tonite at the Firehouse Saloon in Houston, TX. Load in and sound check with sound company at 5:30 then off until 10:30 or so when opening act clears stage. I am going simple with just my Emmons, profex, px300 (as monitor).

So..
A ton of miles and gigs later, I find myself riding and listening to a few of the band play super smash Mario on the overhead TV. We are traveling well over a thousand miles in the next three days for shows and radio interviews. Left out of Houston early this morning for Lubbock, but stopping in stephenville for a radio station. Tomorrow Dallas. My new desert rose was delivered yesterday but I haven't even got to play it
Fun huh? You bet!

Hi Steve - I'm glad you are enjoying your new gig. Every once in a while I still get the itch to spend a week or so back out on the road; but it's kind of like any addiction, if you wait out the craving, it passes, and then you're glad you didn't indulge! Laughing your pal, jc

Hey Steve!
Great to see someone posting about the Texas country circuit. I've been playing with Rodney Parker and 50 Peso Reward for a year now, and it's been a fun gig. Hopefully we'll run into each other at the Firehouse, BlueLight, Goldenlight, Wormy Dog... etc. Do you know any of the other steelers in the scene? Burton Lee and Roger Ray are two of my buddies and great players. Eleven Hundred Springs and Jason Boland respectively. Anyhow, keep posting about your travels!

Hey Hillary.. I certainly recognze those venues:) I've been playing around Texas for the last 16 years or so and have met a ton of steelers. Since I picked up this gig, I've yet to run into a single steel player. It's funny because all of the Texas country acts I've run into in the last two months(Radney Foster, George Ducas, Max Stalling, Brian Burke, Phil Pritcher,Bleu Edmonson, and a couple others) have steel all over their CD's, yet don't carry a steel player. One of the tightest bands I've got to share venues with in the past was Zona Jones with Jody on steel and Robert Herridge on fiddle... they kicked butt! OF course, Jody is a tremendous player. I wish I was one tenth as good as him. I'll bet we run into each other sooner rather than later, knowing the nature of the Texas Music Circuit. We are in Northgate at BCS tomorrow night at a private party in a club that has been closed for the event... It's for the Chilifest folks, so should be fun. See ya on the road!

I too have recently started a new gig(s) on the Texas circuit. I am currently playing with John Slaughter (former fiddler for Roger Creager), and playing with Jody Booth as much as I can. I am still working a full time job, but hopefully in the near future...!

Hey Jake! Remember that Tele? I've got it back again.
Good to see you are out there picking. Hope to run into some steelers out there. We are at the Hall of Fame next weds night sharing the bill with Aaron Watson. He's got a steel player but I don't recall who it is.

Driving into Kingwood this morning at 8am exactly, our new single (Midnight America) came on Texas Mix 105.3 kinda cool.

Hey Hilary.... just found out that we are booked on the same festival venue this spring. CramJam... I don't know what day we are playing but hope to run into you and some fellow steelers. This looks like a pretty neat festival. Attendance ~30,000. Huge woodstock style stage. Sounds like fun!

Boy, Steve... hearing about your playing gigs with the Texas Music Scene guys makes me just a little homesick for the two years I did with Gary P. just a little while ago. It's a good community of pickers.

Add Gary P. Nunn to the list of artists with steel all over the album but rarely onstage. It's mostly an economics thing, I feel. Keeping the band four-piece is what's in the budget for many.

Hey Hilary! I'm another player on the Texas circuit, my full-time road gig is with Jason Allen, but I also play with Grady Skelton, Horse Opera, and some other Austin bands that are more traditional. Burton Lee is one of my good buddies and is a slick player! Hopefully our paths will meet one day! And Jake, I'd like to get to know ya! Jody opened up for us in Livingston back in July when I first started playing for Jason and Kenny Jackson used my steel and my rig. I really enjoyed his playing. Congrats on the gig Steve! It looks like y'all are having a blast. Hopefully our path's will cross out on the road!

whew! a ton of miles. We did over a thousand miles last week. Off this weekend and taking it easy.
Big news for the band though...
Our video for our new single "Midnight America" was picked up by CMT and is in rotation on the CMT PURE channel. If you have a moment, go to the following link and vote for "Rosehill". Lottsa shows coming up as we just signed with a new booking agency.
