Here is a you tube I received from someone taday, and I was reminded how great a player Jack Smith was at such a young age. This video is priceless! The song always touches my soul and that ShoBud has an unmistakable tone.

Love the song and Jack, You are still one of my favorite players!

Hello Darrell;
Thanks for posting that link.
Jack was so very young but played what needed to be played. The whole Goodman family played their own instruments back then + that GREAT singing!!
I grew up in the south at that time listening to the Goodman Family - such great music - many times they played all night long too.
Thanks .. Ron

Very nice! Watching that clip, one name kept coming to mind...Jimmy Day. This young man's phrasing and tone really reminds me of "Mr. Country Soul", one of my all time heros.

Thanks, for the clip, Darrell...I'll tell Lynn "hello" for you tonight.

A good example of Jack Smith's work is from a 1992 live recording date: "Connie Smith - Live in Branson, MO USA" (LaserLight 12 138)

http://www.amazon.com/Live-Branson-Mo-Connie-Smith/dp/B000001V2Y/ref=sr_1_15?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1289660595&sr=1-15

Jack's one of the all time greats - great tone, attack and ideas. He came back on the Connie Smith Band late '90's - early '00's? - I wish those Opry spots been recorded.

I've seen a video with Rusty Goodman, the greatest voice ever in Gospel music, playing steel guitar.

Hey Steve – You’re right the Opry does record everything. Sometimes they’re video taping, too – that’s when the red light is on at the back of the Opry House. The Opry is compiling a great record of Country Music and steel guitar history. Fortunately, everything’s digital now so it will be easy to store, catalog and reference. We’ve seen a lot of great steel playing on the Air Castle of the South - including Jack Smith. I’m still old school – there’s just something about hearing steel guitar on a car radio.

I met Jack in '87' when he was with Gene Watson. I was 16 at the time and had only been playing steel a few months. His playing really inspired me. He also introduced me to Evans amps in which I still have an Evans today. Jack, sorry I haven't stayed in touch with you but you are without a doubt one of my all time favorite player and I hope you're doing well.

I also forgot to mention I was at the live in Branson show with Connie Smith when it was being recorded. Jack played a teal with a black top sd-10 zumsteel. I would really like to get a copy of that album. I'm assuming that Amazon still has those for sale?

Years ago, when the saturday night show was over at the club; about 3 AM; I'd head for my other job at the TV station. Those Goodman Family tapes and Jack Smith saw me through many a hard Sundays work.

We crossed paths several times over the years and those are special fond memories of mine. He is surely one of the greats on steel guitar. Wish we could hear more of him nowadays !!

Regards, Paul Very Happy Cool Whoa!

Dean, It's available at Amazon new for $2.09 but worth $200.09. One of the great live C&W albums. Thanks for verification on Zum. Thought it was an Emmons all these years.

When I first met Jack, he had a black sd-10 emmons. But that guitar ended up getting stolen so he had Bruce build him a new guitar. I think he sold that guitar but since then has another zum now. Jack is one of those players that can make any guitar sound great.

Does anyone know if Jack is still playing these days. I know he lives in Arizona now and thought he might still be playing somewhere. He is really way too good to not be playing.

I Talked with Jack a while back. We both grew up in the same small town in California. His father was the Pastor of our church. Jack hasn't played in a long time. He said life is taking him in a different direction. He told me if he does start back playing he'd like to teach someday.
Jack did all of the Hinson's recordings but the last two. Jack is a Hero of mine and listening to him play is such a treat. He is one fine picker and a great person.

Jack is a monster player. I met him in 1973 when I was 16. I was playing for the Singing Rambos and Jack was with The Happy Goodman Family. Back then Jack played a lot of John Hughey stuff. I never could tell if it was John or Jack on those Goodman records. I came to find out it was Jack. When I went to work for Connie Smith I took Jack's place. All I heard for months was "Jack did it this way". Jack is a long time friend and I miss seeing and hearing him play.
