Another machine down.

I turned on the machine the morning after the time
went back to standard time. It has never booted up.
The message I get "it is in power save mode." And there it remains. It is a Dell 530. I checked out the battery, by leaving it out for over a minute. No dice!

This is my second machine to come down with some kind of virus, lately. I fixed the other one by replacing the hard drive. 35.00. Best Buy wanted 190.00.

How do I get out of "sleep mode" in order to boot into Windows?

I assume a Dell Inspiron 530.

If you are getting the "Power Save" message on the monitor that only means the PC is not sending any video signal.

Do you get any Beeps at power on? What is the color of the power indicator light (and is it steady or flashing)?

If there are no beeps or the power indicator light is not coming on at all, it could be the power supply. Unplug the AC power cord for the PC for about 2 minutes and then plug in and try. There is a "crowbar" circuit in the power supply (basically an electronic circuit breaker) and if it trips you must remove the AC power from the power supply for a minute or so for the crowbar circuit to reset.

If this doesn't help, unplug the 24 pin power connector on the motherboard and jumper pin 14 to ground (green to black) and see if the power supply turns on. This doesn't prove the power supply is good and supplying all the voltages - just says that it will turn on. However, if it doesn't turn on the power supply is toast and will have to be replaced. The 530 (as long as it's a full tower 530 and not a compact tower model 530S) uses a standard ATX power supply. Get at least a 400 watt model. I would suggest a "modular" style power supply as it eliminates some of the unused power cables and trying to cram all the unused power leads in the case.
