Hi! Please give me some of your favorite crying pedal steel in a song? Artist and song title. By crying I mean those songs with the majority of the pedal steel parts on really high scale. Much Appreciated!

Anything played well above the 12th fret is affectionately called "Hugheyland" after the late great "Papa" John Hughey.
Look up Vince Gill and Conway Twitty and listen to any of his recordings with them and you'll see why.
Listen to a favorite, Sweet Memories. It'll make you cry, promise.

clete I have all of papa john Hugey recordings as well as his instruction DVD,ALSO HIS time jumpers dvd,
I agree with you on his uper register playing on the songs you mentioned, every steel player has tried to copy his playing ,but in my mind all has failed to succeed in doing it. so far that is.
We must not forget the new up and coming ones _________________ GOT EVERYTHING a steelplayer needs except movement owing to a bad stroke

I'll move this to the Pedal Steel Section, because it has "Techniques" listed in it's description.
I gotta agree with the above recommendations for John Hughey's legacy.
Also have a listen to Al Brisco's "The Heartache".
Some players "Cryin Sound" comes off as a caricature of itself. Others play the same notes and sell it, really touching your heart. |

Chris has it right.
The minute long outro John Hughey plays in Conway T's "Lost in the Feeling." It is the reason I started playing pedal steel. _________________ Chris Lucker

Brad Paisley's song "I Wish You'd Stay" features cryin' steel by Mike Johnson or Randle Currie and if you listen to "I Cross My Heart" by George Strait, you'll hear some cryin' steel by Buddy Emmons or Paul Franklin.

Vince also did another song in which John Hughey made the steel cry on, "No Future In The Past". It's got a cryin' steel solo before the second chorus.

It's not all up in "Hugheyland", but Sonny Garrish plays great crying steel on the choruses of Reba McEntire's "Somebody Should Leave". |

I'll throw in another vote for "Crying Steel Guitar" ... there's a restrain in the performance on that tune that has a stronger effect on me than any other "crying steel" I've heard. |

Now who could play more crying steel than this classic by Little Roy Wiggins. And remember not a sign of a pedal or a knee lever.
Makes me cry, and I loved and miss him soo much.
May Jesus rest his dear soul.
