A throwback to the past! And what a sound!
(note: if the sound cuts out, try reducing the resolution to 360p (360 TV lines, p=Progressive Scan) by clicking on a button on UTube just below the video.
It is the progressive scan (repeating every other line) that cause computers to go nuts. Since they are NOT designed for that; it was designed for TV sets.

Isn't that the voice box that is employed in the first track, which was created by Pete Drake? When was it used for the first time?
I first heard it back then being used by Joe Walsh, on his "Rocky Mountain Way". The box starts at 3:17,

All three players are great! |

Indeed it was a voice box, which respectfully Pete did not invent. Alvino had it possibly before Pete was born. For Al was also an electronic's genious, similar to Les Paul.
In the movie clip they dubbed the sound so Alvino would not have to have that "Osama Bin Laden awful" (nasty) tube in his mouth; as his voice modulated the strings' vibration; that was then "mixed" in the PU to change sound waves into electrical waves.
And now.....................
"You know the REST of the story".
Things are rarely as they seem to be, dear person.

I would really appreciate it if people posting YouTube links would take the time to explain what they contain. A YouTube URL contains no information. It would be helpful to know what the video contains, without having to access YouTube to find out.
I'm often listening to music while I read the forum. Deciding to click a YouTube link is also a decision to interrupt an L.T. Zinn CD in the middle of a song. For that reason, I have not yet clicked the links above. Perhaps if I knew what they contained, I would be more inclined to click them. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. For whatever it's worth, Kayton is getting that "pedal" lick, like on C6th by using his ring finger on his left hand, to pull the A (3rd string) a half a tone to a Bb. He calls it,
"That's my clawhammer lick!"
You can do this too on E9th by lowering the E's to Eb and "blues"ing it up by using the B pedal.
Try it!
But believe it or not, it is doubtful anyone could get it quite as well as Kayton does it.
May Jesus richly bless this humble man. I consider him one of my dearest brothers in Christ; on this planet. And I am especially blessed, because Jesus led me to break the ice.
IE: Kayton would NEVER play any of the conventions. NOT even Scotty's. He flat turned Scotty down for 25 yrs!
"I don' Play them $%^$*& pedals. People don' like pedals. And I ain' gonna play at no shows, and make a fool out of myself. The answer is NO! All they wannna hear is them $##$%^&^* OLD PEDALS! I ain' comin'"
The rest is history. Scotty's words...
"HOW in this world did you get him to play? I have been trying for over 25 yrs. And all I get is NO!
What did you say?"
Hmmmmmmmmm
I ain' sayun. But I will give ya THE perfect clue......
Ask Jesus!

Here is Kayton's tuning:
Fender D-8 custom. He bought it new in the '50's. It is the ONLY guitar he has ever recorded* on (as far as I know). Like Willy Nelson's acoustic, it looks like it has been through WWIII; but what a sound!
Here 'tis:
Notes:
1. He installed an eye bolt just to the right lower of his pickup almost to the bottom of the top of his inside neck. He will often very quickly between songs, tune down his 8th string (Low A) til he can pull it off the nut and then hook it under this little open eye hook.
"It gets IN my way sometimes!"
Then when he is finished with that song ("Bells of St Mary's is one of them), he will do the reverse in a flash. When ya gotta, ya gotta do it, to survive in the musical world.
2. The 4th and 5th strings on his outside neck are out of order. It is NOT a mistake. Speedy West came up with it. He uses it to SLAM strum. Being out of order is what helps to give that sound at the end of the video above.
3. Studying these (and other) laptop tunings, and It does not take long to see WHY we have our pedals and knee levers as we do today.
The Kayton's, LIttle Roy Wiggin's, Don Helm's**, Speedy West's, Jimmy Day's, Buddy Emmons', Juaquin Murphy's, Noel Boggs', Herb Remington's, Curley Chalker's, etc, etc, AND the master of all, JERRY BYRD; were trying desparately to compete in a world where piano players and guitar players (to name just 2) effortlessly played chords that NO single tuning could get on a lapsteel...
UNLESS, you tuned it the way Eddie Alkire did. But then ya better not strum it, cuz the producer would kick you out of the studio, AFTER the other members tarred and feathered ya!
Page 34 of "The Evolution of the Pedal Steel Guitar", published in 2008 (author unknown).
* For those who do not know Kayton. He was Hank Snow's Steel Guitar player for 35 yrs. No, he did not play on "Movin' On". That was Joe Talbot; who later became an international "Fender" rep. And can be seen playing a lap steel in many early Fender photos.
The following UTube shows Joe playing a lapsteel behind HS. Listen for the clickity click by Joe.

** Don Helms and 3 other musicians played; as Hank Sr provided the backup.

Hi Carl, thanks for posting the photo of Kayton from Atlanta show. I was there that weekend, and I remember sitting on the floor in front of the stage and watching Kayton, Herb Remington and L T Zinn play the best non-pedal set ever. I was fortunate to meet Kayton later and get a photo with him.
I will always remember that weekend in Atlanta as one of my most favorite memories.
Thanks for getting him to play that weekend.
Best wishes to you,
Dennis |

Carl,
Thanks for the posts and explanations.
In the first clip I kept watching Alvino when that vocoder like talkbox effect came in and didn't see any singing.
Pure magic huh
I love how he plays often without picking and his incredible tone knob "talking" like a trumpet with a plunger.
Hepcats is old, they call 'em Alligators now!

A bit of trivia!
When Kayton turned me down flatly, I would not take no for an answer, and after trying every persuasion in the book, finally, I said,
"Kayton, THEY WILL LOVE YOU! Won't you please come and let the world know what only a few of us know?".
Well........................ They ain' no body ever said that to me before..................................Well, I ain' sayun I'm coming..................BUT..............
I'll think about it! But remember, them people WON'T like it cuz I don't play them %$$%$#? PEDALS!"
As soon as we hung up, I called Herb Remington and Little Roy Wiggens (WHO had agree to play, then got very sick and had to cancel).
"Listen I got Kayton ON the fence".
"PLEASE call him RIGHT now! PLEASE don't wait a moment, and PUSH him over that fence!" They both agreed. Then I prayed to Jesus.
The next day Kayton called me and said,
"Looks like the WHOLE world is callin me asking me to play, so I guess I will, but THEM people ain't gunna like it!"
When he got done playing; and AFTER 3 standing encores; with people still screaming for more; I walked over to him with the mic and said,
"Kayton, IF I was to produce this show next year, would you come back?"
Faster than lightning he smiled from here to eternity, and exclaimed loudly,
"YOU'D HAVE TO DRIVE ME AWAY!"
And the crowd went wild. As they were screaming for "MORE, MORE, MORE!", David Russell kicked off "Movin On", on his fiddle, and Kayton sat down to his guitar and started that inredible train whistle and I lost it.
Tears flowing down my face as I looked at Scotty, and Stoney and Herb Remington and sooo many more glued to his every movement.
If I live to be a 100, I shall NEVER EVER forget that moment.
Praise Jesus for the awesome talents he gives people like Kayton to simply do the impossible; and bring joy to others. There is NOTHING he can't play. NOTHING.
He and his late wife (Iva Lee) gave my wife and I a 12 hours concert (spread over two days) in his home. And even my wife was totally spell bound.
NO matter what we called out, he would continue to say,
"I don't know if I remember how that goes, honey do you know it?"
Iva Lee would kick off a few notes, and he would literally tear it up. I kid you not. Just imagine a 1950 Deluxe reverb, a 1950 Fender custom D-8 with the stuffins beat out of it, and a 60 yrs old DeArmond vol pedal, and what comes out of that amp is simply unbelievable.
No words can express HOW much I love that man.
Sorry (Don) I jes caint make this into a "ONE liner".
But I am trying.

Whenever I reminisce I always think of Carl, Kayton,Herb, and all the other great players at the Steel Guitar Extravaganza show in Atlanta. It was indeed one of the most enjoyable experiences I can recall. I cherish the memories. Thank you Carl. |
