I found this song "Drifting and Dreaming" in a book of Hawaiian songs that I purchased sometime back but I wasn't all that impressed with it until I heard Dave Soreff's masterful playing of it on HSGA's website and I thought what a beautiful song and I knew I had to learn it. I found out that Dave used Jerry Byrd's arrangement so I immediately ordered Jerry's tab from Scotty which is for C6 tuning so I had to transcribe it to the Alkire Eharp tuning. Jerry's tab also has some harmonics in it (Dave has this included in his playing) but for the time being I didn't include that because I need a lot more practice in that area and then I will redo the song and include it. I recorded the song using a really cheap Flip video camera. Hopefully all of you will give a listen.

By the way Doug I should have put this in the reply above but several weeks ago I purchased your Book of 25 Songs for Lap Steel and I took your arrangement for Blue Christmas and transcribed it to Eharp tuning and I have it on YouTube also. To make sure I don't put in the wrong link search on eharpplayer1 and give a listen to it. Since I modified the ending slightly I created a BIAB track to suit. I would appreciate it if you and all others would check it out too.

Very nice playing on Blue Christmas, Mel! Your intonation is right on, always in tune, and your slants are in perfect tune. Great job. And thanks for mentioning my book at the end of the clip.

Mel,
I think I played that song with Mr. Alkire when I took lessons from him back in the 60's. He tabbed out a great many songs from that era (and older) and gave them to his students to practice. I had an advantage in that my father played the piano and he knew most of the songs, so he played along with me. Mr. Alkire thought I practiced many hours to get the phrasing right. |
