For anyone interested in the world of resonator guitars, here's a recap of the 2010 "Reso Summit"! This was written by Betty Wheeler, Co-Producer.
The 4th annual ResoSummit, co-produced by Rob Ickes and myself at the
Scarritt-Bennett Center & The Staion Inn, just ended on Sunday. A few
highlights:
--14% international participation, with participants from Italy, France,
Netherlands, Switzerland, Scotland, Ireland, Israel, and Canada.
--Mike Auldridge announced his retirement from Darren Beachley & Legends of
the Potomac just before the final song during their ResoSummit performance
at the Station Inn on Friday night. Mike's performance, his last with the
band, was truly great, among the very best I've ever heard, and there
weren't many dry eyes in the house.
--Jerry Douglas made a surprise appearance to co-teach Michael Witcher's
"Decoding Jerry Douglas" workshop on Friday afternoon.
--Youngest participant: Age 11. Next youngest: Gaven Largent, age 14,
attending his third ResoSummit, and performing a great blues tune with Randy
Kohrs during the closing faculty performance on Sunday afternoon.
--Rob announced the establishment of a ResoSummit scholarship for future
years, named in memory of Houston Caldwell. This scholarship will
underwrite ResoSummit attendance by deserving young people.
--84 workshops offered over 3 days, at low-intermediate, high-intermediate,
advanced, and very advanced levels, with a few beginners in the mix.
Recording studio workshops at the Compass Records studio (co-taught by Ben
Surratt and Rob Ickes) and at Randy Kohrs' Slack Key Studio (co-taught by
Randy and recording engineer Mike Latterell). 3 performances at The Station
Inn: NewFound Road featuring special guest Justin Moses on dobro; Darren
Beachley & Legends of the Potomac; and Rob Ickes and Jim Hurst. After-hours
jamming deep into the night.
--Kudos to an outstanding faculty: Rob Ickes, Mike Auldridge, Mike Witcher,
Andy Hall, Randy Kohrs, Sally Van Meter, Jim Heffernan, Cindy Cashdollar,
Orville Johnson, Josh Swift, Kim Gardner,Justin Moses, and surprise guest
Jerry Douglas, plus two luthiers who taught workshops and worked hard all
weekend to keep everyone's instrument in good shape: Tim Scheerhorn and
Paul Beard. Workshop teaching support from Jim Hurst, Casey Driessen, Ben
Surratt and Mike Latterell. Stellar volunteer support from Dwight Worden,
Jen Ickes and Christine & Dave Hultman of MN. Thanks to these great
sponsors: D'Addario, Beard Guitars, Scheerhorn Guitars, Compass Records
Studio, GHS Strings. Stealth support from the awesome Claire Lynch. _________________ Beard Guitars, LLC

Thanks for sharing that, Howard. I haven't had a chance to write up my own recap yet, but my photos are here on my .me site. I also got to visit Steel Guitar Nashville and meet Bobbe Seymour for the first time - the other highlight of my week!
I'll just say this: Best. ResoSummit. Ever. I didn't attend one workshop that wasn't worth the price of admission. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

I had a great time teaching at my second ResoSummit. all my classes went really well. It was nice to see the students from last year (hey, Brad) and new faces too.
Betty Wheeler did a killer job organizing things and it all seemed to run like clockwork to me. So glad to see Mike Auldridge there and all the great players and teachers on staff. 2011, here we come!
PS when will we see you there, Howard? |

When they change the name from Beard Guitars LLC to "Howard's Pretty Good Guitar Co."
It is my destiny to stay behind and keep the doors open.

She forgot to add "and two Moderators of the SGF".
This was my third year. This time I stayed an extra day to catch The Time Jumpers on Monday night.
Paul was in fine form. This is the first time I saw the band with their newer member, Vince somebody.
I also bumped into Mr. Amy Grant at Ghruns Guitar Shop early Monday morning.
A Great Summit!!! |

You know you're having a good ResoSummit when you miss seeing Mike Witcher deconstruct Jerry Douglas, Jerry Douglas shows up as an unexpected guest, and you don't mind missing him because you're having so much fun doing something else.
Definitely Best. ResoSummit. Ever.
I didn't have a single class that wasn't totally worth the time. Orville Johnson explained jazz to me in ways I hadn't gotten before; Sally Van Meter got my chunk going where it should and was stern but fair regarding my playing; Jimmy Heffernan explained playing minors better than I've ever heard it.
Mike Witcher and Cindy Cashdollar gave a GREAT demo of lap steels, ably assisted by the Blow Jays. Cindy played a Fender Dual Eight using C6th and E13th tunings, and Mike played an Asher Electro Hawaiian Junior tuned to open E.
Special shout out to those attending from Europe and Israel. They were all high quality players and seemed to be having as much fun as I was.
Tim Scheerhorn replaced the cone on my Wechter Scheerhorn with one of his new cones, and the tonal difference is amazing. Just watching him at work upgrading a 1982 Dobro® was worth the price of the Summit.
My gallery of photos is here: http://gallery.me.com/wellvis#100122
Note that I also visited Bobbe Seymour's Steel Guitar Nashville and got to eat some Hog Heaven barbecue.
Big thanks to Betty, Dwight and Rob for putting this on again. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Jana, good to see you posting here. I have to say between the Giants winning the World Series (sorry about the Rangers, Jana), the Resosummit, and seeing Blue Highway play in Berkeley last night (I was able to thank Rob Ickes after the show for the Summit), I have been on Cloud 9 all week!
Stephen, this was my first Summit of the four held so far, but I believe the way it works is that the e-mail to claim your spot for 2011 will go out to this year's attendees first. Then later, for those who did not attend this year, one can join a waiting list.
I got on the waiting list pretty early (check the Resosummit website) and my number came up last summer after some folks had to cancel.
The first two years I believe there were 80 "Summiteers." It took about one month for the first one to sell out in 2007.
This year there were I believe 100 spots, and it took one day to sell out, though some people had to drop out later enabling folks like myself to attend.
And now I am on the "insider's" list! _________________ Mark |
