"I've been practicing and playing pedal steel guitar for one year now, nobody seems to want to hire me, do you think it might be my attitude, or, maybe I ain't as good as I Thought I was"? Guess maybe steel guitar is dying, after all, I sound just like a dozen or so pedal players out there. Do you think the world owes me a living, or a spot on the "OPRY", after all, I been trying. Of course they owe it to me. I've been on this forum for a while, my SSI won't run out for an "election" year yet. Thanks for all your understanding. "A TRUE DREAMEER" Jay Y.

Once you reach a certain level of proficiency, getting a music job will depend on a myriad of other factors. Getting along well with other musicians, having a positive attitude, dressing appropriately, projecting a good stage presence, even your apparent age can be a factor.

There are a lot of steel players that can play the notes and sound right, but playing live music is much more than that. It's a collaborative artform. If you don't get along with the other people onstage, they won't want to play with you. Some acts are very visual as well. If you don't look the part, leaders of those bands won't hire you no matter how good you play.

I've heard the phrase "Too much gray on stage." Clubs that cater to the young and hip often don't want to see grey beards and male pattern baldness. Band leaders know this. Other venues don't want spiked hair, torn jeans and t-shirts. Each of us knows where we fit in that spectrum. The pro musician maps out the largest middle ground, appearance-wise, that he can muster.

And some of us have larger "middle grounds" than others, appearance-wise. Laughing

Jay: it might be a good idea to attach a sample of your playing before asking why no-one will hire you. Winking
