Years ago I had a 7 string Sho-Bro which I picked up in a trade. I played this thing for a while and really liked it as it had a type of G6th tuning on it which was low to high: G-B-D-E-G-B-D. It was nice as you could do some swing type stuff on it as well as the bluegrass things and that one extra E string eliminated a lot of extra bar movement on single string things. I traded it for a Fender Telecaster years back and have kicked myself in the butt ever since! I've got that tuning on a lap steel without the low G and I have a Dobro with the standard G tuning also. I was wondering if anyone knew of an instrument maker out there who had 7 string Dobro type guitars available? I've been doing a lot of acoustic stuff lately and it'd sure be nice to have a 7 string.

I'm not aware of anyone currently offering 7 stringed reso's, however, 8 string guitars are available through Paul Beard and others I am sure.

Just add the low E and there you have it. G6 eight string.

Hi Jerry,
We offer the Melobro in both 7 and 8 and are working on a 10 string model.
There is a free video available that compares the sound and let's you view the models. Paul Beard does have an 8 String model too and you can reach his web site through Resophonic Outfitters.

Jerry,

I made my 6-string Dobro into a 7-string by drilling a hole in the middle of the peghead and putting a banjo tuner there. I had to modify the bridge and the tailpiece, but it works great. I like the narrower width of the strings a lot more than I do an 8-string.

I also have a couple of 7-string lap steels. Though I don't use your tuning, I'm a big fan of the 7-string, mainly for the width of the neck.
