Vanduras and Similar Space Music Tunings?

I've been listening to the Vanduras, the Friends of Dean Martinez and similar spaghetti western soundtrack music and haven't had a lot of success trying to play what I'm hearing. Am I making things more difficult than necessary by trying to sort these out in my usual C6 tuning? Any suggestions?

Wonderful stuff!. Chris, it's basically dorian mode, meaning if it's in the key of C, Gary is playing in the "key of D minor". D minor has the same notes as the key of C, but instead of C, E and G being the "primary notes", he's concentrating on D, F, and A. That's why he's on the major 2nd when everyone else is rooted. You have all the notes available on C6.
