J.D. Maness did a great job backing Johnny Mathis on the Tonight Show on Tuesday evening. Cool
Johnny sang the Patsy Cline classic tune "CRAZY".

Thanks for the link Roy. It's the last segment of the show and JayDee is the featured soloist as well. Smooth and tasty!

Jay Dee demonstrates why the pedal steel is so loved by so many. The superb tone he gets from that Emmons Push Pull just makes you want to play the song over again. He never covers up the singer, and leaves you wanting just a little more of that steel guitar.

Great work from all the musicians. I could not recognize the others, but I'll bet they were L.A. musicians, backing up Johnny Mathis on the CD "Johnny Mathis in Nashville".

The usual consummate professional job from JayDee that we've come to expect, and a throughly unimaginative choice by Mathis. Could he, (Mathis) have played it any safer? Oh well, I guess we have to consider the target demographic here.

Mathis made a carrer out of playing it smooth and safe.
Is that a Vegas JD's playing through?

Amazingly, the cameraman didn't pan to the Rhythm player during JD'S lead and he was up in the mix too.

hey..it was an ok job on a boring song by johnny and a good job by jd....but nothing like what jd can really do. great to see him though, and nice to see steel hitting the tv airwaves lately..like with mike johnson/jimmy webb, jamie johnson and the cowboy dude and russ pahl with willie, etc.
it would be hard put to say steel isn't making some kind of a statement lately. not to mention all the single necks showing up alongside the beaver-shooting sex act/chick singers!

...ben..by the way, i'll always think of jd as one of the coolest, hottest steel players ever!

the reigning aristocracy of california steel players is headed by jay dee and bobby black..the two undeniably greatest of california steel history..still alive and out-picking the rest of us.

of course there are the next 100 great pickers out there in the state..all of which are better than most of us, but jd's and bobby's histories and personalities warrant the top spot.

IMO, Jay Dee is one of the best ever. I don't think that anyone could have done a better job with that song. Then I've been saying that about Jay Dee since the sixties when I first met him. Thank you Jay Dee.

I think I understood what you meant, he's my favorite player and we all know he can tear it up.
That song didnt really give him the launch pad to go off like say "Hello Trouble" does, but as always he played just the right thing to my ears.
Go Jaydee!

I know he's old school, but isn't Ralph Mooney from California? He's got enough music and personality in him to rate the top three, I think!

It's ironic that some of the best exposure of the steel-guitar currently is by pop singer icons who wouldn't get near the instrument when they were in their prime!
