Topic: Who knows about Standel Amps? |

Had the chance to pick up a Standel "The Studio X" today. Works well, including vibrato and reverb. It's solid state. Speakers are 2-10" Jensen gold label "Special Design", with date codes that indicate a 1964 manufacture. Just looking for some general info from you electronics folks. Seems like it will make a nice recording amp, but as of yet, I've only played a lap steel through it to see if it worked.
It is covered with padded upholstery, but I think someone "customized" it at some point.
Any info or experiences with these amps would be appreciated.

Used 'search' and found out enough to know I did well
buying this for $200. Was wondering about power output. 25-30 Watts maybe? Anyone?

If you call Danny McKinney at modern day Standel, That's who he would send you to, as they do not deal with the old standels.

Not trying to take anything away from Tim and his abilities, but the last I talked to Danny Mckinny, he was referring me to Woody. Woody has worked on Standels since they were 1st marketed. Woody also sold Standel for years and years. When I tried to get Tim to look at my STandel, I tried numerous times, and never got him on the phone or even a return call--nothing. I can ALWAYS reach Woody. Woody is a WIZARD on any amp, besides reconing speakers. Good enough for Lloyd Green and Buddy E., good enough for me!!

Hey Joe, that'll probably be one fine amp as the older Standels were works of art. I had several of them in the old days. About thirty years ago I was working a club in Huntington Beach, Ca. which got broken into one night and our amps were stolen. I had a Randall at that time but Blackie Taylor fixed me up with a Barcus-Berry 2-12 solid state amp. I played it for a while and was having some speaker problems and since I lived in Costa Mesa and Barcus/Berry was in Newport Beach I decided to take it to the factory......
Much to my surprise they sent me to the engineer in the back of the building who just happened to be Bob Crooks the founder/owner/designer of the original Standel amps. We talked some about some of the same people we knew (especially Johnny Davis) and he looked over my amp and then we went to lunch together. Bob showed me a room he had set up to repair old Standels which was right in the B/B factory. He was so nice, he replaced the two stock B/B speakers in my amp with a pair of 12" JBL's and only charged me $50......What a deal. I'd go by and see him from time to time as he was so close and we'd talk about the old days and some of the old people who played his amps. He died some years back but he made a great contribution to the music world, especially in the SoCal area.......JH in Va.

Lucky purchase I have wanted one for some time.
Ain't none in these parts. The designs was quite different than most amps at the time and today,
and that truly gave them a unique sound.
Not gonna be as loud as many things these days,
but a super sweet sound you should love will come out.
But I don't like playing louder than 25w anyway.

As the former owner of Standel amps, both tube and transisters, I must say that both were the greatest amps in their time for a steel-guitar.
If Standel had incorporated a reverb they would have been out of orbit, but they didn't, so they failed.

Of course now you can insert a great reverb and
the amps can be perfect for their volume level.

| Actually, many Standel models did have a reverb, including the top of the line mid 60's solid state Custom that Wes Montgomery, Buddy Emmons and many others used used. |
