A couple of weeks ago (Sun. 9/26), listening to Willie's Place in a rental car, I heard a great version of "Funny How Time Slips Away", with absolutely killer soulful steel. It was in a long string of songs and I never heard any identification of the cuts. It wasn't Willie or Ray Price--the singer had a mature lower-pitched voice. The steel solo was one of the finest I've heard.
Does anyone out there have an idea of who that singer, and especially that steeler, might have been??
I've got to know! |

Could it be George Jones on his new album "Hits I Missed" w/ Paul Franklin (at his best) on steel |

You know, I think it was the George Jones version! I'm embarrassed because I didn't recognize George as the singer , but in my defense, George sang it pretty straight, with signature "George Jones-isms" really absent.
At the time, I did think it sounded like Paul F. He sure knocks my socks off on that one! |

I agree, Brint. I've spent lots of hours trying to duplicate the steel work, especially the break, on that one--frustrating but fun |

Hey Ray:
I have been a fan of the Billy Walker version (I believe the first version) for a long time. Even though the steel was all but absent on the recording, I have often wondered who it was that played the chimes at the end. Thanks.

The Leon Russell version is a regular feature on XM-13 these days. It has great steel all over it but I have no idea who it is. There is another thread here somewhere about those Leon recordings. That thread may give a hint.
(Now, at this point is where Brett Day usually chimes in or our resident Research Director, Mitch Drumm will inject a complete discography) _________________ Bill Cunningham
