On The Sunny Side Of The Street with a solo

I just finished arranging a little bit of "On The Sunny Side Of The Street" for C6/A7 and put the tab/notation up on my Lap Steelin' blog, if anyone is interested. It's kind of fun and sort of an open-ended topic. I have only tabbed for the verses and left the bridge open for interpretation (in the spirit of Noel Boggs). It is a simple version for a simple tune, but it manages to incorporate some nice chords and also some slightly challenging moves.

The next step will be to begin breaking down the improvisation in progressive steps. But for now, just the first step in the process.

Thank you for indulging me! BTW, this is the Clinesmith with the lighter gauge strings, including the .022P G string. I really like the way it sounds.

Thanks guys!

About 25 years I remember buying a few cutout LPs in a record store in Jersey City: one was Lloyd Green's "A Day For Decision" and the other was Curly Chalker's "More Ways To Play." I would have never have guessed in a million years that I'd be saying what an influence he's been on me. The influence is subtle, but it is important to me. Curly is the most incredible chord player I've ever heard on the steel. Certain things he did have become a part of my own playing, such as the wide vibrato which resembles a horn section in a shout chorus. And his right hand had a mind of its own and he could do things that no one can.

When I sat down tonight to improvise a few choruses of On The Sunny Side, I thought about Curly and how I could utilize just a tiny part of what I've absorbed from listening to him. It's almost like listening to Milt Buckner or Bill Doggett or Dick Hyman or even Red Garland. Those block chords he played were something else. Playing that style on non-pedal is surely going to have its limitations, but if you think about it and listen and search, you can come up with some cool stuff.

Here's On The Sunny Side Of The Street with a chorus of improvisation (the solo was not a spontaneous improvisation, but I played about 10 choruses until I had enough ideas to string together, than I played it down).

On The Sunny Side Of The Street with a solo

Hope you enjoy!

John, I have a gig 2 weeks from tonight at Rodeo Bar on a bill with Jim Campilongo and Bill Kirchen. How's that for an evening of good guitar playing?

Mike,

Thanks so much for posting the tabs and audio. I spent some time on Sunny Side this morning and it was so much fun.

Can you--or anyone else tuned in here--recommend audio or video sources for Curly playing in this style?

Thanks again for all you do.

Enjoy the gig with Bill Kirchen! A great guy and a super musician.

Best,

Bob

While the sound quality is not great on this, here is a short clip of Curly. He starts playing in a chordal style about :30 in:

Obviously, my attempts are feeble compared with his, but he has influenced me to explore this style and ultimately develop my own approach.

Hi,

Thanks Mike. I recall seeing video of Curly and band playing Tennessee Waltz in 4/4 time, but cannot find it anymore.

Does anyone have a link to it?

Thanks again Mike.
