I am wondering how difficult it is to install this pickup DIY. The guitar already has an endpin jack installed so I'm only concerned with installing the pickup into the spider. I have moderate luthiery skills.

John - I did it and botched the job the first time and I have pretty good luthiery skills. I probably would have had more success if I had bought a new #14 spider with the set screws. I'd recommend buying it all from Beard and have them do the install and mail you the spider/cone/pickup assembly and then you can install it in your guitar. (If you are handy at that).

I'd recommend you read these posts carefully. Lots of info in here:

Good luck. And note that this isn't the Holy Grail, but it's the best thing we dobro players have at the present.

Hi John,

I did the installation myself in a older model, made in USA Hound Dog Dobro. I have a fair amount of experience doing guitar repair and some custom building and found it to be relatively simple. The critical aspect really is getting a good even fit for the Fishman bridge. I used the spider assembly that came with the guitar and spent a fair amount of time truing up the spider's bridge slot and making sure the fit was even. The end result is that I have a gig worthy low cost reso that sounds as good as I've heard in a loud band situation. I will say that while feedback is greatly reduced, it is still a significant issue, and the sound, while more than acceptable for my needs, does not compare with that of a great resonator unamplified. Hope that might be of some assistance!?

All the best,

Julian

John, one of my posts from an earlier thread on the subject. You owe it to yourself to at least check out Kent Schoonover's spider with Aura setup - a fine piece of work.

Quote:
Paddy, right now on the Forum Rob Anderlik, whom posted earlier on this thread, has a Wechter/Scheerhorn Rob Ickes model set up for the Aura by luthier Kent Schoonover of Oklahoma. If I weren't already saving for a new acoustic/electric six string guitar, I would have bought it by now!

One of the top pro players, Michael Witcher, has this setup in his koa Clinesmith, and he is very happy with it. At some point I will probably get my Clinesmith set up with it. I know of several pickers that have Kent's spider/Aura setup in their guitars, and they are all very pleased with the results. It is really slick, a fine piece of workmanship. You don't have to send your guitar to him which is nice for you, being half way across the world. Check it out here:

I had my Fishman Pickup installed by a pro. I watched the whole process and I'm glad that I decided to have him do it.
The bridge has to be grooved for the strings, and also, the spider from Beard that has screws, had to be filed so that the bridge/pickup would fit in the groove.
If you are comfortable with grooving the bridge for strings, you could probably do ok with setting the bridge as long as you take it easy and make sure not to force anything. I was warned that the pickup/bridge is fragile.
I'm happy with the results, so far.

I ordered the pickup from Beard installed in their spider which I swapped into my Gibson Leadbetter. Then it was only a matter of making a small hole in the cone ledge to route the wire and make the jack connections. Beard bench tests the PU spider assembly and this was cheaper and less risky than shipping my guitar round trip. As others have said, I wouldn't put the Aura bridge in my best guitar because it changes the acoustic sound and volume. You can't beat it plugged in however.

Just an update on this one... I ordered the JD Fishman saddle pickup and Spider from Kent Schoonover, i got him to install it on his modular spider and put in the string grooves as well. he then shipped it to me out here in NZ and I installed it (with some helpful hints from Kent on where to drill the right holes) !!

The job turned out to be fantastic (even with my efforts) and it sounds incredible - even without the Aura pedal !

So now I am ordering the JD Aura to complete the picture - from Kent as well, he was very helpful and I highly recommend him if you don't feel up to doing it yourself.

Paddy, I'm glad that the Schoonover setup worked out for you.

Now, I have to send my address to Kent so that he can mail me the commission check... Winking
