Maybe I'll have better luck with this one. Can anyone ID the guitarist?

Thanks for the link, Alan. As the photo is from "Paradise Hawaiian Style" the steeler must be Bernie Lewis. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

I was too busy checking out the girl. You say there was a steel guitar in there? |

Like the rest of us Bernie Kaai Lewis's appearance changed over the years. There's a published picture of him, shown side-face, chatting about ukulele with Presley on the set of "Blue Hawaii'.
Comparing the pictures I think I'd go as high as 90% in identifying Bernie as playing steel in the picture. I just wonder which scene this is from... maybe I should run through the film to try and find it.
Who else would it be, for that matter? It isn't Freddie Tavares or Alvino Rey! Would they have brought in someone else when they had three top steel-men there in the studio? It's a bit odd, perhaps, but in all of the shots of back-stage "Blue Hawaii", I've never seen Alvino, or even a steel guitar, in any of them.
There are pictures of Freddie, though. _________________

Just remember that this is "Paradise Hawaiian Style" not "Blue Hawaii". |

Oh well, while we are on the subject I may as well put this one up too. It is said to be from "Blue Hawaii." Quite a charming picture. Looks almost authentic, or a least not too "inauthentic" (is that a real word?)

No doubt in my mind it's Bernie. He's backing Elvis on the tune "Scratch My Back". Remember that one?
In this scene Bernie is also honoring "The King" by donning his jet-black toupee! In later years Bernie gravitated toward a lighter "sun-kissed" color toupee. With or without a "rug"... Bernie was one of the greatest. |
