I have read a lot recently concerning speakers in Fender amps but I am starting a new one so it will be seen by all you Fender experts. My 72 (I think) Deluxe Reverb has a 12" built for Fender by Utah speaker. I have a new 12" Black Widow. Do you guys think I would hear an improvement if I replaced the Utah Fender speaker with the Black Widow? What difference should I hear?

I have always wanted to try a 12" BW in a Deluxe Reverb, but they only rarely turn up these days. I've heard them in other amps, but not a Deluxe.
I expect it would sound quite different than using the original speaker. Some of those Utahs with the large magnets sound very good, but I think I'd expect the BW to have better high-end and low-end clarity and probably also higher efficiency - i.e., louder for the same input power. I guess whether or not that would be 'better' would be up to individual taste. I think I'd like that for steel, maybe not so much for guitar, depending on the application. I've tried a lot of high-clarity, high-efficiency speakers in my Deluxe - mainly JBL and EV speakers of different types - and that was always my take.
I also imagine the BW would sound different when pushed hard, but I'm not sure a 20-watt Deluxe Reverb would tend to push them to the limit very easily.
I still have the old Oxford from my '65 Deluxe Reverb soldered to the original speaker wire/jack and stored for safe-keeping, and just hooked up a new wire/jack to the JBL D-120F that's in it now. That keeps the original assembly completely original and this approach is, frankly, easier to implement and easier to put back to stock in case you prefer the original speaker. |

I've tried a 12" BW (paper dust cover) in a '66 Deluxe Reverb and it sounds really good with my Fender 400. I didn't try it with my newer steels. Send me an email and I'll send a little clip of how it sounds. I was experimenting with new tuning changes and my son video taped it. I remember not liking it for regular guitar though. I've been searching for the happy medium double duty rig. I now have a JBL K120 and seems to work good for both.
I think a BW with the silver dust cap would sound real good and be an improvement for pedal steel but possibly not for regular guitar. I think the paper one I used was a good match with the Fender. It helped mellow out the high end. _________________ Dave Zirbel-

What's the difference between a BW and a Scorpion Plus. I've got one of those on a sub-baffle board mounted in my '56 Pro Amp, and it sounds abdo-lutely terrific. It's been in most of the studios in Cleveland, as a loaner or a rental. |

I have a Weber 12A150 (50 watt Alnico, like an old Jensen) in my custom Fender Princeton-ish amp (34 watts w/2 6L6's). Sounds great for guitar and steel; bright, but not harsh, nice low end, smooth midrange. |

the thing about those older Utah and Oxford speakers from the "era" is, they are crappy, really mid crazy... ! But consider that they are 3 decades or more old...
Speaker technology has really taken off , replace that Utah with that BW, great speaker also consider a newer Fender Gold Label Eminence , a 50 watter, the amp will wake up !
Those Emmi's have now become my favorite speakers, I have them now in 3 or 4 amps and will put one in my 76 Deluxe Reverb as well...
Most of those era Utah's and Oxfords were very strong in the mids but we didn't know any better..now we do !
I recently acquired a 71 Twin with the original Utah's, It's a great amp.., but on the 1st gig it popped one of the Utah's, I should have known it was going to happen. Here I have a stellar amp, rebuilt and using 39 year old speakers ! Hellooo ! I replaced them with a set of Emmi's and it is a totally different amp...bright, clear, clean.." Mooney'ish" it reminds me of my Hot Rod Deville with more bottom end and much cleaner at a good stage volume. _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

Don't mean to state the obvious, but if you already
have the BW....install it an see how you like it.
It won't take that long to swap speakers. Listening
to the speaker is a lot more accurate than reading posts about it on the forum. |

Hi Jay, it's good to hear from you, it's been a long time. You are right, I do have the Black Widow under the bed and I could have already had it in the amp and should have. This little amp sounds so good to me as is but just like most everyone of us I am always searching for s better sound.
