Whenever this tune comes on the radio, I can't help but sing along, and I don't sound too bad with it either.
A tune that never really needed any steel accompaniment but perhaps would sound good done completely in steel.
Does anyone know who wrote the tune? It really is a classic. I memorized the lyrics about 2 years after Hawkshaw Hawkins untimely death.

Great song yes. Nice to sing along with. I play it as an instrumental sometimes.
Justin Tubb wrote it, I think. |

definitely justin tubb the writer.
he told once that he wrote the song with a girl singer in mind and pitched it to jean shepherd and she immediately recorded it, but, ken nelson, her producer/a&r man rejected the song for her as being not what her career needed and shelved it in the can.
her husband, hawkshaw hawkins, told her if she wasn't gonna release it soon then he would.
the rest as they say.....
goes to show that a great song will surface no matter what the obstacle.
time and time again in this case.

L J, I second your comment. A version better than Tony Booth's I don't think can be had. _________________ Les Green
